THE VERDICT:

If you like reading cosmetic labels like me, you'll realize that almost all powder products contain Silica, this mighty ingredient that is highly prized in the world of cosmetics. There might be a question mark lingering in your head so let me briefly introduce Ms. Silica to you.

Silica is a mineral, naturally found in the earth particularly in Sandstone, Granite, and Clay. Thanks to modern science, the beauty industry has found a way to extract this mineral without us having to manually filter these earth compounds to get Silica (And I doubt we know how, unless you're a scientist!). Silica is a great anti-caking and opacifying agent, one of the key helpers in long- wearing eyeshadows, face powders, liquid bases, concealers, blush, and bronzer products, plus it has great oil- absorbing properties. And since Silica has this natural smooth and fine texture, it has become the ingredient of choice for most HD setting powders. Unfortunately, when you see HD, the word expensive usually follows.

BYS' new PRO Makeup range includes the HD Microfinish Powder, which is made from pure Silica, but without that jaw- dropping price tag. If you're starting to ease yourself into the world of PRO makeup, this HD powder is one of the great makeups to start with!

BYS HD MICROFINISH POWDER IN DETAIL

BYS said that this product imparts a velvety, soft, smooth, and long- lasting finish on the skin. It only comes in a translucent shade.

So this product is made up of only one thing: Silica. Actually, you can buy Silica in bulk from cosmetic manufacturers and resellers-that's what almost everyone did when Silica first boomed in the makeup industry and women were trying to find places where they can get it cheap, but a word of caution to everyone: There's the risk of getting contaminated Silica if you just get it from anyone or anywhere. Contaminated Silica poses health hazards such as emphysema and lung inflammation so to be sure and safe, buy from legit and licensed brands.

Experience the wonders of Silica without spending a fortune after the cut!

The product comes in a 5g tub. The price of this product may seem a bit too much, but know that most branded Silica powders begin at P1,000.00+ and at the same size and volumetric weight.

So here's Silica for ya! It's virtually weightless, dry but soft and smooth at the same time. It is pretty translucent, but should you decide to layer it on, please buff it onto your skin properly to prevent getting that white cast-as I've said in the beginning, Silica has opacifying properties.

This one is unscented and the only thing I dislike about it is it doesn't cling well and quickly onto powder brushes so I have to exert a lil' more effort than usual when I'm setting my liquid base. After working with this powder for a week and with all sorts of powder brushes, I found that a big, fluffy powder brush is the perfect tool to use with this product.

BYS HD MICROFINISH POWDER IN ACTION

It applies invisibly and goes well with any type of liquid base, and has the ability to blur the skin's texture, making it smoother and more flawless plus it softens rough areas and conceals enlarged pores to boot-all these, you can achieve with this product without having to apply a smoothing primer underneath. Another great feature of this product is it's low- dusting, thus I don't choke on powder particles whenever I am using it, although it can give off that flat matte look-to combat this, I dust some highlighter on my complexion.

Hands down, this product has real good sebum- controlling properties: on warm days, it takes 5 hours before oil begins to seep through my pores and on cold days, it takes 6- 7 hours. Awesome! I think I already found my favorite BYS product! This powder is perfect for oily and combination oily-normal skin types, and those with normal and slightly dry skin too. If you want a powder that has sweet, sweet oil control, this is perfect for you. Similarly, if you're starting out in your makeup artistry career or if you're already a seasoned one and you've been meaning to cut back on your makeup expenses, I would recommend this!

  1. Very interesting! It reminds me a lot of the Essence matt finishing powder. How do they compare?

  2. I've actually never tried any Bys product before. I don't get much reviews from bloggers until recently. I've seen a lot of bloggers talk about it, but this is a first review about the HD powder that I've read. I didn't except it to be good, but I'm super glad it is. Now I have the reason to try BYS and I'll start with this one. I'm searching for powders like that kasi that refrain from making my face become oily. :)

This is very timely as ive always been on the lookout for the powder from essences but its always out of stock. I will definitely buy this this pay day! 5. Thanks! I've been looking for a good finishing powder for my oily skin. Although I've just been using tinted moisturizers lately, I discovered that setting it with powder makes it last longer on my skin.

  6. Pat: Essence is cheaper. Unlike BYS, Essence doesn't have good smoothing properties. :D

Tess: Indeed! I think even cream to powder should still be set with powder given our weather. :)

Eloise: Hello there! Nice to see your comment again :) Haha, yeah, the blurring property of this product makes me wanna buy it again too!

Melanie: Hey there! Thanks for comparing it with Ellana's product- at least my readers can look into that for a cheaper option. :)

Abegaill: Let me know how you like/hate it! :)

  8. I hoarded a lot of powders, but this seems like a great oil-absorber! Might give this a try, esp. when there's a big sale! Hihi.
