FAN MAIL FRIDAYS: Reasons Behind Lash Fall + Eyelash Curling Tips + Grow Your Lashes

I went to several malls this week and realized that they're putting up their Christmas decor already; it made me a bit excited because my most favorite time of the year is finally here. This year may not be my best compared to the previous ones, but I'll lie if I don't say that I'm still pretty blessed.

So! Our post for today is from Bea and her concern is lash fall. Yikes! Let's help her out.

Hi Martha,

I'm afraid of curling my lashes because every time I curl them, some lashes fall out and I'm afraid I will lose all of them that's why I only use Benefit Rollerlash, but I find it quite expensive for my budget. Can you explain why? Also, can you recommend eyelash curlers that won't break my precious lashes and tips to make lashes grow faster? Thanks!

Bea

Hi Bea!

Sorry to hear about your lashes. I know how stressful it is when a single lash falls out; what more a couple of lashes!

Lash fall depends on a lot of factors. Truth is, we lose lashes every day because the body naturally sheds hair every day, but if you observe that your lash fall is quite abnormal, then it's time for you to take a closer look at your eye/lash regimen or see the doctor to pinpoint the root cause. Here are some of the reasons behind lash fall; I'm also dishing out tips on how to curl your lashes safely and techniques in inducing lash growth.

1. Weak lash roots

- Do you always see a lash coming off with a slight tug at your lids or even at the slightest pinch of the eyelash curler? This could be the reason.

2. Chemical Sensitivity to Eye Products

- You could be sensitive to certain mascara formulas or even the skin care that you use on your eyelids. It is important to know the ingredients you are allergic to by seeking professional medical advice to prevent problems like this from getting worse.

3. Eyelash Curling

- Most especially if you curl your lashes carelessly and you always tug your lashes. Frequent tugging at the lashes can induce lash fall.

4. Health Conditions

- Lash fall could be a sign of a disease or bacterial infection. Conditions such as Alopecia, Blepharitis (inflammation of the eyelids caused by bacteria; incurable, but manageable), Trichotillomania Tangle (psychological condition wherein one pulls out their hair), and Thyroid Condition can be the cause of lash fall. Chemotherapy can also cause lash loss.

These are the leading causes of lash fall, aside from the body's natural shedding process. Now that you know these things, use them to pinpoint what's behind your lash fall.

Is your eyelash curler hurting your eyes?

Yes, an eyelash curler can hurt your lashes and eyes most especially if its contour is not patterned after the natural curve of your eyes.

These are the three eyelash curlers that I've personally tried; two of them are considered some of the world's best eyelash curlers. Some people are saying that Fanny Serrano Eyelash Curler and The Body Shop's Eyelash Curler are great as well.

I personally recommend all three eyelash curlers featured above; it just depends which one fits your budget!

Here are some eyelash curling tips:

1. Always be gentle when curling your lashes
2. Avoid pinching your eyelids
3. Avoid curling closely to the roots
4. If you have shaky hands, place your curling arm on a surface for a steadier curl and to prevent eyelash tugging
5. If you feel that you have sensitive roots, just curl the middle portion of your lashes

Hope this helps, Bea. Have an amazing weekend, everybody! :D

  1. I've read that Shu Uemura is the leading eyelash curler, i want to experience it too, but it's costly for an eyelash curler, though if we could have one, it's an investment already for our lashes. :)

    1. It's a real good investment. I've had mine for 5 years now and it's still working!

  2. Also, your lash curler might be a bit sticky from makeup residue from previous use. I realize my lashes break sometime because of that so I make sure I clean them after every use.

    1. That's true especially for those with sensitive lashes. I get that a lot on my curler, but thankfully, it doesn't cause me lash fall; I just hate it when my lashes get stuck in the hard gunk! :p

  3. I have the same problem with you bea before.I agree with all the tips of ms.martha, try castor oil because it's effective though it takes time to see the results. I've been using Apollo castor oil ( the blue one) that I bought in mercury drugstore for almost a year now. Its affordable too. I use it on my eyebrows too. Hehe.

    1. Yes, I did try Castor Oil and it works! It's in my how to grow your lashes tips. :)

  4. I believe castor oil also strengthens lashes aside from inducing hair growth. I myself use cold pressed castor oil for my brows and lashes and noticed a huge difference. In my case, I haven't experienced lash fall at all.

  5. Good thing I don't have to worry about this since I do have strong and thick lashes. Though I still get a lash or two falling off from time to time, it's not a major concern. Haven't tried Castor Oil but what's effective for me was Sunflower Oil. Have you tried that yet, Miss M? ^-^

    1. Castor Oil, I tried already and it works. Sunflower, not yet. I'm not sure if the latter is a popular product for the lashes; I believe Olive oil is. :)

  6. I believe there is a seller on IG that carries a product for eyelashes. It has Castor Oil and is housed in a mascara-like tube with wand. I have experienced falling lashes but when i changed my curler, the fall-outs lessen.

  7. I am currently using a Koji eyelash curler but I feel like it's not for my eye shape. I have short and small eyes kasi and most lash curlers are for longer eyes (like a longer slit/eye opening). The Heroine Make near my area doesn't have the eyelash curler (nor the eyeshadows :() so I'm thinking of getting another one from koji :P Or splurge on Shiseido or Shu Uemura :D

    1. Shiseido has a less curvier shape so I think that would fit your 'long' eyes better than Shu. :)

  8. I agree with the choice of curlers. Like Bea, I have lash issues as well. I have short and sparse ones. So I don't regularly use lash curlers because I worry of fall out as well.

I have my roller lashes as well, but if on a budget, the Maybelline Hypercurl mascara would be my go-to. Amazingly inexpensive, but it actually work. One time, my boyfriend and I fought and I cried. I was worried that my mascara would budge and make me look like a panda. But when I checked, it was still holding the curl with no smudge at all. Talk about glamorous drama. Lol!

Anyways, I'd recommend applying Castor oil on your lashes after cleansing because of its hair growth components. I use it for my hair as well.

  9. I have the same problem. Glad you made a post about this. I used to have full lashes, now that I pay attention to it more, it looks like I've had fall outs. 😭 I don't use curlers cause I'm afraid. When I also take off my eyeshadow, I use an eye makeup remover but I'm also afraid some will fall off which is why I have stopped using waterproof mascaras which is a bummer cause waterproof mascaras are said to hold curls longer. Thank you for this!

    1. You're welcome and welcome to my blog. If you're worried about this, but you still want to use waterproof mascara, just don't use it everyday; alternate it with a water resistant or regular mascara.

  11. That's really scary. And that's what scared me too so I wasn't using an eyelash curler before. I really invested on the Shu Uemura curler so as not to risk my lashes. I am blessed to have long lashes so I need to take care of it. :)

  12. I'm going thru lashes probs as well. I normally leave my lashes alone and steer clear of lash curlers but recently my college batchmate convinced me to get eyelash extensions from her clinic.. 2weeks after I unknowingly pulled them out while I was asleep. So I tried removing the rest but ended pulling most of my lashes in the process.. Now, I look like I dont have any lashes at all.. I'm trying to grow my lashes and I'm glad to stumbled upon your blogpost. Thanks Martha! :)

  15. I would love to invest on Shiseido eye lash curlers. Yes it's pricey but I've read so may good reviews about them. Also not a fan of curling and putting on mascara because I have the same fear with Bea so I don't usually wear them. But thank you Ms.Martha for helping women in our daily struggles especially when it comes to beauty products!
