DEAR READERS: Do you lend makeup?

I was in a public bathroom one time and saw two ladies chatting over work, boys, and other stuff that girls talk about while putting makeup on and sharing it; girl 1 curled her lashes and when she was finally satisfied with the way her lashes pointed up, curler gor passed to girl 2; the bright red lipstick touched one pair of lips and another; noses got powdered with an aging powder puff. I was thinking to myself, they must be really close to share very private stuff with each other and at the same time, I questioned: how close is close?

The bigger question that I'd like to ask everyone, as inspired by that moment, is: Do you lend makeup?

When I was in highschool and early college, I would lend all my makeup from powder to eyelash curler because I did not know any better; I did not know that sharing lipsticks and mascaras can transfer bacteria from one host to another and start an infection, and I did not know that you're supposed to keep intimate stuff to yourself.

Now that I know a lot about beauty and cosmetics, I kept lending to a minimum: I'd only lend very few makeup products, specifically makeup products that are easy to clean such as blush and eyebrow pencil (strictly for eyebrow use only) and under certain conditions like borrower should have okay skin, no signs of breakouts, and no signs of skin conditions; absolutely no lending of makeups that touch the sensitive parts of my face, the eyes and lips, and no lending of sponge! I may sound rude to some, but hey, I'm just taking care of myself!

So what's your stand, sisters? Do you lend makeup? Why or why not?

  1. I also don't lend makeup, if it's just the brushes and eyelash curlers that's fine. But when it comes to lipsticks, sponges and other makeups that really touches my face I don't. That's also the reason i don't like testing makeups in a store I just swatches it on my wrist or neck if it's a foundation.

  2. I lend my blushes and eyeshadows ONLY to my mother and she has super smooth skin than mine. She's the one who sanitize it before she use it or vice versa.

  3. I'd rather give than lend! Sounds selfish, but I share the exact sentiments (darn, I could have written your post myself haha!). :-)

  4. Yes, me and my Mama shared our makeup products only because I just borrowed her things (^~^) But of course soon I will buy on my own and buy for my Mama too(^_-)

  5. Just bringing back memories in my younger years where I used to be a chronic makeup-sharer to my best of friends and try their stuff too because of curiosity. But now, mostly of my stuff are simply a big NO to lending, shouldn't share because I am aware also of the risk of sharing makeup. Thankfully, none of my friends today is trying to borrow because I know it's hard to say no to a friend sometimes without appearing off as a selfish;)

  6. Absolutely no.No matter how rude you may seem, you are only doing yourself and the other person a favor by avoiding a greater chance of infection through the tools used to apply makeup.Personal items as they obviously are, even rubbed as against the skin, they are meant to be utilized by just one person.Di ito kaartehan kasi there literally are many microorganisms, many harmful ones that we cannot see with the naked eye and they get passed around.Kaya nagcocomplain ang iba about acne and pimples, many cases are caused by skin infections due to such practices plus the pollution in the air.

  7. Me, my sisters and my mother lend each other makeup but I don't do it with anyone else. Instead of lending, I give it to my girl friends.

  8. Maybe I'm in a friend circle where borrowing makeup barely happens (not really a practice) because we have our own things (really, that's how it's supposed to be). I can only think of borrowing/lending eyebrow product on a few occasions (because I can't stand having unfilled brows and I encourage my friends to have theirs done, ako naglalagay,LOL). But that's just it. :)

  11. I have been back-reading your blog today and I cannot remember how far I've gone. :) Anyways, I don't share any make up. (Well unless they have their own brush/sponge, why not? Sharing is loving!) It's unhygienic to share make up/make up tools.

  12. I used to lend my lipstick with my bffs when i was still in school. I remember we are all wearing the same red lipstick on my birthday. We were laughing at our pictures because our lips were uniform haha! Now, I don't share makeup anymore. Even my four year old daughter has her own lipbalm and sponge for her pressed powder but her pan is empty, so it's just sponge and mirror, hihi!

  13. I'd only lend my pencils (eyebrow to be specific). I had an eye infection before wherein I thought that It was just a 'kuliti' haha but it was not! The doctor said that never ever lend a mascara to someone, she even told me that most of the pro make up artist uses a disposable mascara wand to apply mascara to their clients. Since then I'm very madamot na. :) just being safe though! :)

  14. I think it's okay as long as it's not something that you use directly on yourself such as lipsticks, sponge, make up brushes, etc.

  15. I usually lend only stuff that don't touch the skin directly, like blush. I lend only to super close friends whom I know have good skin, good hygiene and good brush cleaning regimens. Lending lipsticks and mascara sounds awful, honestly. :(

  16. I'm ok with lending makeup unless the borrower has bad skin (acne and warts). Lipstick is fine because you can always wipe off a layer and use an alcohol spray. I would never share mascara though, did you know there's such a thing as eyelash mites?!

  17. I lend them only to my sisters and mom because I am sure that they're clean hahaha...

  18. I don't use make-up so I will comment based on what i observe with my wife. Mrs. Ahab don't lend her make-up to just anyone. There were times of course that she lend some make-up to her sister.

  19. As a beginner, I'm still building up my makeup and tools but sharing makeup is just too unhygienic. Indeed, most people may consider you rude and selfish for not lending makeup but I think that a true sister would understand. :)

  20. no.. when i was in highschool (cosmetology class) we had our own makeups to use.. from brushes to lipstick.. we were taught proper self grooming and lending things you didnt know if it was properly cleaned (sanitized) may transfer bacteria and may cause serious skin problems. even today i dont lend my tools and makeups.. i have makeups for gigs and separate makeup for myself =) hindi ako madamot pero mas mabuti yung nagiingat..

  21. true! i don't want others to use my make-ups. feeling ko i'm bad, but it's for the good naman. kaya minsan i just bring make-ups na usually for retouch lang, like lipstick and eyebrow pencil..

  22. I don't. Because people in my school are like, closed-minded. They srsly think it's a bit slutty if you wear make up. Hays. I can't do anything to change their mind, lol. So, no. But thank God, I read your post. Because I might lend it to someone if they ask me to.

  23. Ugh, I see a lot of girls in school who exhibit this behavior. The lipstick of one is the lipstick of all. I don't want to sound "maarte", but I'm horrified. One, can't you buy your own makeup? If you can't, then you don't need to use it. Two, the germs! Would you share your toothbrush and your panties with all your friends?

  24. A no, no! As much as possible don't but on emergencies probably but only your extras.

  25. My mom always borrow make up stuff from, even if I don't like it i'll have or she'll get mad at me.. I already know it's a bad thing to share make up. But what can I do

    ReplyDelete
  26. No, unless they have their own brush. Although I hate saying no to friends who borrow, sasabihin ko na lang madumi. ack!
I also don't like borrowing makeup, I'm shy especially if I have pimples. Baka sabihin pa ng lender hinawa ko sya :D

  27. My girlfriend and I share makeup. Most of it is just liquid bases that come in hygienic packaging so we don't mind.

I let my sisters use my makeup because they seldom need to put on makeup (attending events, etc). We just make sure that we sanitize the brushes properly before and after each use.

Actually, I'm pretty okay with sharing makeup as long as it's with someone that I really know. I started out learning about makeup from a friend who would let me borrow hers, and for that I am forever grateful to her.

Being clean is absolutely important for me, though. I remember way back in high school, half of the girls in our senior class got sore eyes because they shared eye liner. Wtf ew right?

  28. My makeup and my face are both precious to me that's why I really don't lend my makeup except to my sisters and my mother. I'm really OC with that that I even request my sisters to be hygienic when using my makeup :) But with friends, sorry but I won't let them use my makeup

  29. Yes I do! But only my cheapo, not frequently used ones. Hehe. I always have a spare kikay kit sitting on my closet, it's packed with stuff either I don't use anymore or I'm not so fond of. So.. when someone borrows my kikay stuff, I hand over my back up make up kit.

There used to be a time that I was such a goody two shoes that I allowed a few girls to use my high end ones.... and they ended up breaking two of my lipsticks, using up 40% of my favorite concealer AND attempted to arbor my ruby woo. NEVER AGAIN
