FAN MAIL FRIDAYS: The Girl-Stache + How I Remove Mine

Happy Friday guys! Leaving everyone with this interesting, love-your-body type of question from one of my loyal readers, Anne:

Hi Martha,

What are your thoughts on 'girl-stache'? I have one and it's embarrassing because I love taking photos of my lipstick.

I have a few specific questions: 1. How do you remove them? 2. How frequent? 3. What are your recommended salons to have it removed? Thank you very much!

Anne

Hi Anne!

I think I don't even have to say, but it's pretty obvious in my photos that I have a girl-stache. :) And what do I think about it? Nothing. It's fine. I'm okay with them; it's only hair; it doesn't destroy my life so I have no issue with my girl-stache. The funny thing is, others have issues with it! :D They say I look 'ugly' because of it and I seem unhygienic; these are just assumptions and I know they're not true so I'm not bothered at all!

I do wax off my girl-stache, but it's just I don't seem to have the time nowadays and I'm such a spendthrift to cough up hundreds of pesos for an upper lip wax so I wax my 'stache on my own. What product do I use?

I just use VEET Wax Strips; I cut one into strips, grab one, and start waxing; I just follow standard waxing protocol to keep my skin safe throughout the process; I've been using VEET to remove my girl-stache for a year now.

How often do I wax my upper lip? Around 1-2 months; I let the hair grow out fully; I don't wax often because I noticed that the skin on my upper lip gets irritated quickly so I give it enough time to recover before the next session.

Finally, for the salons, Benefit Brow Bar or Browhaus, two of my trusted girl-stache removers when I'm just too lazy to wax 'em off on my own.

There you go, Anne. Having girl-stache is okay so don't worry too much about it. ;)

  1. I agree on the part where you said that other people are bothered of your girl-stache, it's non of their business anyways. And for me I don't like removing hair especially on my legs because why bother I'm not that hairy and I don't want to spend money that will make my legs look ugly after the hair growth. I want to try veet for underarm removal but do you think it's safe? I am afraid that it will irritate my underam.

    1. Agree! If it doesn't harm humanity, people then shouldn't give a frack about my girl-stache haha!

As for VEET underarm, I haven't tried it yet, although I tried veet depilatory cream on my legs. :) I have a review.

  3. Count me in as I have mine too.In my opinion, I don't see anything to worry or to be embarrassed about having a girlstache not unless you have super black and thick just like men have.Just kidding. Having a girlstache doesn't make you ugly nor seems unhygienic Ms.Martha, not at all. Anyways, thanks for sharing your personal ways about waxing. Never tried it before but I'm curious to try it.

  5. Definitely nothing wrong with girl-stache. Boys can have them, why can't we? Haha but on a more serious note, it's good that you don't always wax it, Ms. Martha. Frequent waxing leads to the eventual destruction of hair follicles and though that might sound like it's a good thing since there's a chance that the stache won't grow back, it's actually scary since the skin on the upper lip can also have permanent irritation. :/

  6. If it is not too thick and not that obvious, i guess there's no reason for you to be ashamed of it but if it will make you feel better and will make you more confident of yourself, then go and enjoy the salon waxing experience or wax them off by yourself.

  8. Oh I don't get bothered with it. Removing it never crossed my mind but, I heard someone tinting it with chemicals to make it lighter and less obvious.

  9. Having a girlstache is one of those things that make you a truly unique being. Not a big deal at all. But I know of a girl who for some s has a bit elevated testosterone count, and she has to wax her girlstache because it's thick. She also has to wear a bathing suit with a skirt because her pubic area is more pronounced because of the elevated testosterone level.

  11. Thanks Martha! Didn't realize you'll post it soon, I was thinking of waiting for a month at least before you get to my FMF. Hihi
Although no one has pointed my girl-stache yet, I just feel conscious because I know they're there... I guess it's just vanity on my end. But again, thank you and thanks to the other commenters as well. :)

  12. For me, I don't mind at all. Anyway, it's not that visible naman. Atsaka it's a facial hair. There's a purpose kaya may ganun. It's normal. And hormonal. Di ko na lang din gagalawin yung akin. Baka kumapal lang. Haha! Problem ko lang sa part na yun is pawisin. But still, it depends on every person. If you don't like it, then remove it. :)
