FAN MAIL FRIDAYS: Eye Brushes 101 + Uses

Happy Friday y'all! Squeezing in this FMF blog post before I go to a meeting. The question is from Fatima:

Hi Ms. Martha!
Can you write about the different kinds of eye brushes and how to use them? Thank you very much!
Fatima

Hi Fatima!

Thanks for this wonderful question. There are TONS of eyeshadow brushes out there and it will take me the whole day to write about them so I'll just write about the main eyeshadow brushes that people use; besides, the other brushes are just slight improvements of these and they just differ in size and length.

Eyeshadow Brush

The main brush that you'll see in a majority of makeup brush sets. This brush is for depositing color on the lids; doesn't have a lot of use other than that so I suggest choose a brush set that does not feature a lot of this.

Tapered Blending Brush

If you're going to ask me, if you can only own one eyeshadow brush, this is it. It can do everything: deposit, blend, shade, shape, and create color gradation on your lids.

Wet/Dry Eyeshadow Brush

Just a regular eyeshadow brush, but can do even more tasks: this can be used dry and wet, and it won't lose its shape; can be used on cream shadow too.

Angled Shading Brush

For creating fake creases on crease-less eyes.

Bullet Brush

A precise eyeshadow brush for creating color effects/gradation; it is also used to create sharp lines on the lids.

Flat Brush

For applying eye liner on monolids and even tightlining.

Eyebrow Brush

For shaping and sculpting the brows.

Eyeliner Brush

For applying gel liner; most advanced makeup enthusiasts and artists prefer this, the bent eyeliner brush, more than the straight one because its shape aids in creating more precise lines.

Spoolie

For grooming and spreading product on the brows, and combing and separating lashes.

Concealer Brush

For applying concealer on the under eyes and spot concealing.

Did I miss anything? Let me know! Hope you learned from this post. :)

  2. Spoolie lang ang alam ko dito, haha! These brushes can be really confusing and blending colors seamlessly can be really frustrating. Thanks for this kind of post that enlightens girls like me who had just came out of the dark caves. I hope one day, you can make a video showing how you do your make up. Have a lovely day,Ms. Martha!

    1. LOL. If you have to choose between these, I'd suggest the following: blender brush, angled brow, and spoolie. :D

  6. Oh, wow! I didn't realize there are so many eyeshadow brushes out there! Thank you, this is very informative. I think I need to get a tapered blending brush I only have the regular one. I also have an angled shading brush, but I haven't really found a use for it until reading your post. Before this I just use it like a regular eyeshadow brush. Uh-mazing!

  10. As of now I have 2 tapered blending brush, one big and one small, and I'm contented with it, because it really can do everything! Just want to add that flat brushes are big help when it comes to applying eyeshadow on the lower lashline. It's more precise!

    1. Right on! I own about 6 tapered blending brushes; two large ones, two medium ones, and two small ones. They're the bomb! As for flat brushes, I don't really use that hehe, but yeah, I could see how useful they are when applying eyeshadow on lower lash lines, like what you said. :)
