THE VERDICT:

I've noticed that The Beauty Junkee ca. 2009 is making a comeback as I've been trying out different products lately, specifically those that are not available locally or the newest in luxury makeup; if you've been reading since that time (and thank you, from the bottom of my heart), you know that I've always had a fondness for luxury and never-before-seen-and-heard beauty products, and it's coming back now. Definitely, more exciting things are in store for all of you!

My latest acquisition is the highly- raved Jeffree Star Velour Liquid Lipsticks. I have discovered Jeffree Star through Instagram and I loved his makeup skills and screaming neon Pink hair, and then I discovered that he has a swell Pink makeup line with his namesake; for starters, I purchased these lipsticks and to date, this is the liquid matte lipstick formula that I love!

JEFFREE STAR VELOUR LIQUID LIPSTICKS IN GEMINI AND UNICORN BLOOD IN DETAIL

This highly pigmented lipstick goes on matte and promises to stay put for hours with its long- wearing formula; it's 100% vegan and cruelty- free. It is available in 31 shades ranging from nudes to pastels to rainbow colors.

Ingredients

I'm really liking the overall design of his cosmetics line and the choice of Pink as the maiden color; it's not necessarily luxe, but rather chic and not tacky at all; it reminds me of MAC Heatherette collection, my most favorite collection from MAC in terms of packaging.

The liquid lipsticks come with a paddle shaped brush that slightly curves at the bottom; I see the sense in this as it helps keep the paddle from wobbling around as you run it across your lips, therefore helping you achieve a virtually cleaner finish; the paddle is medium in size and fits almost any lip shape.

Jeffree's Velour Lipsticks begin as runny, watery lipsticks so it's important to apply them gradually to avoid dripping; I also have a technique to share to prevent the lipstick from dripping during application and that is I kinda' round the bottom of my lips while applying color; the saving grace here is the formula dries up in mere seconds, thus enabling me to build it quickly and preventing dripping altogether.

The lipsticks are pigmented and colors become opaque as they set; they're not exactly matte to me, but rather demi-matte; I actually think that the line is aptly called VELOUR LIPSTICKS because its texture actually gives the impression of velour. Texture has a bit of stickiness to it, but it's tolerable; compared to Kylie's Lip Kit, it's not as drying (in fact, I don't remember my lips feeling dry with Jeffree's lipsticks) and doesn't feel dry. Btw, it has a lovely Root Beer scent and that gave this lipstick line a unique touch!

JEFFREE STAR VELOUR LIQUID LIPSTICK IN GEMINI AND UNICORN BLOOD IN ACTION

 UNICORN BLOOD

- rusty dark red (by Jeffree Star Cosmetics).

I actually liked Unicorn Blood in the swatch photos; I was expecting a deep, dark, bloody red hue, then it turned out a bordeaux red on me; I forgot that skin tone is a huge factor in the payoff of lipsticks. :p Still a great color in my opinion, but what I dislike about this is it tends to look crazy streaky and patchy after a meal and you have to remove the previous layer and reapply if you want it to look as even and nice again as the one in the photo.

 GEMINI

- terracotta warm- toned nude warmed (by Jeffree Star Cosmetics).

Again, Gemini didn't show up as a terracotta warm- toned nude on me, as advertised on the official swatch, but I'm digging the muted Rose Pink hue. I find that this one comes off better and can be retouched fairly nicely unlike Unicorn Blood; the color of pigments used must have played a huge factor in the phenomenon. FYI, Jeffree's best friend is a Gemini; I'm a Gemini and I think he interpreted this sign in this lip color really well!

Staying power is fairly good; it lasts the whole day with minimal retouching, except if you eat, especially oily food (Jeffree even advised to avoid oily food when wearing this lipstick). The Root Beer scent lingers for a while and leaves a very light trail on the lips (it's nice, promise!). What I like most about it is it stays put yet doesn't feel as if it's suffocating my lips and there's zero dryness all throughout!

Save for Unicorn Blood, I think Jeffree Star Velour Liquid Lipstick has a nice quality in general; I like the staying power, the way they feel on my lips, the packaging, the scent, and the non-drying finish, most especially; I like its texture better than Kylie Lip Kit and I want to get Celebrity Skin next.

P.S. Have you heard about Jeffree Star and Kat Von D's Internet saga? What are your thoughts about it?

  2. When I first saw the Gemini shade, I thought to myself, this shade is really up my alley. But after seeing you wear it, it doesn't look as unique as I first thought it was. But I won't be supporting any of Jeffree Star's products. There are plenty of alternatives. It's kinda sad to see Jeffree Star and Kat Von D ending their friendship so publicly, given the number of years they've known each other.

  5. The Gemini is so nice .It looks good on you Ms.Martha.
About the internet Saga I've saw it in Perez Hilton tweet and blog. Aside from Kat Von D meron pang ibang nagsasabi na Jeffree used their design na Hindi sinabi sa kanila and di sila binayaran and they are afraid na magsabi kase Jeffree is famous Internet Star.
If I'm the designer ,at least I would ask for some credits lalo na kung bumenta yung mga merchandise or products.
Both side should sit and talk para maayos.

  10. I purchased some of these from Beutylish ($18 each, mas mura ng konti compared to local prices) and I really, really love the formula. I also love the fact that his line is vegan and cruelty-free, since I only support cruelty-free brands. Lasting power is great din, 11/10 would repurchase. ❤

As for the Kat/Jeffree fallout, it's quite sad lang kasi sayang yung 10 years of friendship. I'm not really a fan of both, but I've known Jeffree way back from the Myspace era and his personality is really in-your-face, he's not for everyone. I like Kat as a tattoo artist but I think it's quite hypocritical of her to paint Jeffree as a drug user when she was the one with the history. As for the logo, BJ was paid even if his designs weren't really used. I mean, it was a star. Common, yeah? I'm not being biased here but why does it have to be so public? And it's sad lang that a lot of YouTubers are dick-riding on this story. Smh.

On a side note, I hope the makeup community is a lot more forgiving and I wish them both the best in the future. Peace and love! c:

  12. I love how both colors showed up on your lips even if they didn't end up true to their swatches. That's one of the most difficult things about buying items online! You can just hope and pray that the colors mesh well with your skintone! :( Still, I've seen a lot of raves about Jeffree's liquid lips, but at the end of the day they say that it's not something special. What I like most about his collection though is how bold the color range is. He came out with a summer collection and there was a freaking bright yellow shade. He also has purples and blues, blacks and whites! It's such an adventurous selection. :)

Now about the whole Kat Von D issue, I think I lean more towards believing Jeffree. Kat was in no place to disclose such information about BJ Betts and Jeffree, because she was not involved directly in the dealing process. That was years ago and they might have settled the dues in a manner Kat wasn't aware of. BJ also released a statement that the situation has been amicably settled. So why couldn't she just leave the issue to the parties concerned? It's such a small issue to cause this big of a commotion, seriously. I also didn't like how she claims Jeffree wouldn't be where he is now if not for her recommending her lab. I mean come on, you can't take credit for everything a person has done because you took part in one of the start up processes. And the issue about Kat telling TooFaced that Jeffree has been stealing some of her product ideas? That's overboard. They both have changed considerably, and they have been good friends for the longest time, so it saddens me to see their friendship end like this. They both have some sketchy statements from their explanations about their sides of the story, but I do value Jeffree's a bit more because he did admit to his mistakes, whereas all Kat did was antagonize Jeffree in a somehow hypocritical way.

  13. I was about to ask if Jeffree Star is better than Kylie Lip kit. buti nalang you included in your post the difference. i think that is the downside ng online shopping we are not able to road test the product first, nevertheless, bagay sayo.
    i'll go for Gemini!

  14. Unicorn blood is so gorgeous! plus the packaging is so nice... plus points is that they're 100% vegan! I also like the shades in Prom Night and Rich Blood... but the price is so high, can't afford! Andami na kayang mabibili sa 1500 :(

  15. I like both colors! They did compliment your skin color, Miss M. I also follow Jeffree Star in IG and drool over. If only these lipsticks aren't that expensive! ^-^

  16. I love that you're reviewing products not available here too, Martha! I've been eyeing that Unicorn Blood for quite some time now and after reading your review, medyo nabawasan yung "want" ko sa kanya since I thought it is as red as what's on the website.
I hope you do more reviews like this - exploring new brands since more and more are starting to try this US shopping trend online. lol and US makeup reviews from a Filipina is very much appreciated because we only have international blogs to look up to when buying a product and we all know they have a different weather/skin tone/complexion what-have-yous than us.

As for the Kat Von D issue, I don't think it's right to publicize something when you can settle the issue on your own. I mean they're both public figures and they sure well know what the outcome would be. Plus, Kat Von D sounds so self-righteous in her video that I don't know what's her deal anymore.
