How To Make A Facial Oil Blend + DIY Facial Oil Demo

Oil fusion or the art of mixing various oils is an upcoming skin care practices at the moment; as more and more people are becoming aware of the benefits of personalizing skin care, oils at the forefront because of its versatile texture that's easy to mix with lotions, creams, serums, and also, oils.

Today, I'm going to teach you how to customize facial oils so you can get the most out of your routine without adding more time to it.

Before proceeding with this post, I highly recommend that you read the blog post I wrote called TAPPING INTO THE POWERS OF ESSENTIAL OILS to help you get to know more this vital ingredient, plus learn about its usage and precautions. Or if you're excited on creating your oil blend, then read on! :)

When creating facial oil blends, you need three types of oils:

1. Carrier Oil- Jojoba, Argan, Grapeseed, Coconut, Olive, Shea, Sweet Almond, Castor, etc.
2. Exotic Oil- Rosehip, Emu, Tamanu, Tsubaki, Marula, Elemi, Maracuja, etc.
3. Essential Oil- there are about 800 types. Examples are Emu, Ylang Ylang, Rose, Lemongrass, Orange, Sandalwood, Frankincense, Rosemary, Chamomile, Lavender, etc.

For a complete list of these oils, please do a quick research on Google. I cannot list them all because there are a lot. :)

Carrier oil is generally the most common, ergo stable and safest that's why you need the biggest volume of it. Exotic oil will be added through a couple of drops to boost and support the benefits of the carrier oil. Finally, a few drops of essential oil will give the aromatic effect and provide the highest concentration of potent ingredients.

P.S. You can use 2 out of the three products only if you don't have all, but they should preferably be  a carrier oil and essential oil.

Let's start:

STEP 1: Grab a 30ml bottle of the carrier oil, the standard size. Personally, I like adding around 12-15 drops; I haven't found any information regarding the standard ratio for carrier oil vs. exotic oil usage, but since most of these are also being used as standalone products in skin care, I guess you can be a bit generous with it.

For sensitive skin, you may want to use a little less than what I use, test it out for any irritation, and add more if your skin is okay with the concoction.

STEP 2: Add essential oil. For a 30ml carrier oil, the standard is 6 drops of essential oil. This technique is called oil dilution: the volume of carrier oil should always be more than that of the essential oil to lessen the risk of irritation. Don't go all out on essential oils because as I said in one blog post, these oils are highly potent (and also volatile) that you risk getting an irritation or sensitizing your skin once you go overboard.

Here's a handy dilution guide on the ratio of carrier oils vs. essential oils:

I read that the safest volume for essential oils is 2-4%.

STEP 3: Shake it, baby.

Voila! You now have a custom oil blend that's unique for your skin type, concerns, and regimen!

Some notes:

1. Avoid essential oils that are known to cause allergies and irritation like fennel, rosemary, angelica, and cinnamon to name a few.
2. Shake your oil blend before use to thoroughly mix the products and use up all the oils used and their benefits.
3. Do not apply essential oil directly to the skin because it can cause irritation or sensitivity.
4. When using a product spiked with essential oil, always wear sunscreen to protect your skin from the oil's volatility.
5. You can also make smaller batches of the custom oil blend. Just take note of the percentage ratio of carrier oil vs. essential oil.

Hope you enjoyed this quick tutorial! Let me know what your recipe is! :)
