FAN MAIL FRIDAYS: How to get rid of Blackheads

I am scrolling through my inbox, looking for an FMF question to answer and this question by Josephine regarding blackheads looks like the perfect one to answer today just because I have a nose pack on right now! Thanks, Josephine for the question!

Hi Martha!
How do you get rid of Blackheads? I have a lot on my nose and they are quite unsightly. I tried exfoliating them away, but it doesn't seem to work.
Josephine

Hey Josephine!

Thanks for the query! First, let's define a Blackhead. A Blackhead is a pore blockage that is a mix of dirt and oil that have oxidized, thus the color and name. Believe it or not, it's considered a type of acne.

There are blackheads that are quite near the opening of the pore, thus they are easier to extract and some are just buried deep down. Here are ways to get rid of them.

1. EXFOLIATE USING ACIDS

- Acids are effective ways in dissolving blackheads because they remove dead skin cells that may be covering them and preventing easy extraction. Commercial acids through skin care like BHA, Enzymes, and AHA to name a few are the popular acids. If you have sensitive skin, do a patch test first and always follow instructions.

2. LOOSEN UP WITH SPOT TREATMENTS

- Common spot treatments like Benzoyl Peroxide and Salicylic Acid help loosen up Blackheads so you can prune or squeeze 'em out easily. Apply a small amount and gradually increase as needed and depending on how your skin can handle the products.

3. POP A PILL

- Got way too many blackheads? You may want to consider taking acne medicine. Consult without a physician first before doing so.

4. GO GET A FACIAL

 - I was told by a dermatologist friend that Blackheads can only be properly and completely removed through manual extraction. If you have deep- seated blackheads, then let a facialist do it for you.

Hope you found this quick article useful. Have a blackhead- free Satruday! :D

  1. This is one of my (many) facial imperfections. I have blackheads and whiteheads on my nose and they are so visible. I just use nose packs since i can't afford a visit to the derma yet.
