Happy first Friday of the year! How's your year going so far? I hope it's awesome! Mine's busy all of a sudden because I'm trying to pull of an event for one of my business' clients, but hey, maybe this is why I got the whole December to rest! :)
Our first Fan Mail Fridays for 2016 features a query from Maybellyn, one of my newest readers. Her question concerns nail polish shades, particularly the ones that will look good on her skin tone and how to apply nail polish like a pro.
Hey Maybellyn!
Thanks for the question! There are rules when it comes to choosing the right Nail Polish shades for one's skin tone, but the thing with this beauty product is the rules can always be broken; if with eyeshadow, cool- toned girls should stay with cool colors and warm- toned girls should stay with warm- toned colors, with nail polish, it can be the same or the other way around. Remember, Nail Polish is actually an accessory: like fashion accessories, it's meant to give your outfit a pop of color so feel free to choose what you think looks good on you and will make you stand out.
Like what I always say, before you break the rules, you should know them first by heart. Here are the basic rules of choosing nail polish shades that will look good on your skin tone:
1. Light is to cool, dark is to warm- if you have light skin tone, opt for cool colors. If you have dark skin tone, opt for warm colors.
2. Wear Nude for a cleaner look and to make fingers look longer- this is the solution if you have short fingers with uneven skin tone!
3. Nude nail polish should closely resemble your skin tone- so the nail polish won't wash out your skin tone.
4. Medium skin tone will look good on almost any shades- yup, they're lucky.
5. Metallics can make you look more tan- wanna sport a tan? This is the easiest way.
Here are some of my suggested shades per skin tone:
FAIR SKIN
- Fair skin is not a reason to be afraid with vampy colors; just choose one with a hint of color (Dark violet, dark blue, dark pink) so the polish won't make your skin look pale.
MEDIUM SKIN
- Medium skin will look stunning in frost shades!
DARK SKIN
- Dark skin shouldn't be a reason to steer clear of light colors; remember to just choose one with a warm undertone.

As for applying nail polish, here's a diagram that I found over at Tumblr that will ket you apply it like a pro. ;)
Hope this helped you out, Maybellyn; I hope the rest of my readers liked today's FMF too!

I didn't know that there was a rule even in nail polish because I just wear any color that I want. Though I hate shades that makes my skin darker. Thanks for the additional knowledge. Nudes will aways be my favorite and maroonish red also:D
ReplyDeleteWell, that's okay too; if you can pull it off and you want it, wear it. :)
DeleteAs for me, I like Reds, pinks, and blushing nudes. :)
I learned something new today and I'm so happy. Thank you so much(^_-)
ReplyDeleteI have dark skin, I always go to light colors of pink and even bright shades like yellow and orange depends on the season.Tee-hee.. I just do it by myself at home.
Thanks for the tips also, its so fun that there have many nail polish shades to choose from. (^.^)
You're welcome. :)
DeleteI love nail polish! But I sucked on applying them especially on my hands. And I usually put them on my toe nails and I agree that the warm skin tones should wear darker colors becauase it will make your feet look whiter. And all my nail polishes are in the hues of reds ans pinks. It is also important to put base coat over your nails if you are aiming for darker colors, becauase it will protect your nails from unwanted discoloration.
ReplyDeleteNude nail polish looks so elegant. I find that any shade of blue works well on my darker skintone :)
ReplyDeleteSame! :D
DeleteThank you miss martha.. It really helps, now I can rock nail polishes :)
ReplyDeleteI'm grinning and my instinct is right about nude (I always sports them because I have "baby sized nails")
ReplyDeleteYes! I have short nails so I like wearing nudes on my fingernails. :)
DeleteI didn't know there was a nail polish rule! I just apply whatever I liked. oh I know one, your polish should match your toe. But there's too many colors to settle for one to prettify your hands and feet! One co-worker even said mesyo cheap pag di sila match, and I'm like, "whaaat?!"
ReplyDeleteAnyway, i have to agree that you should pick a shade that complements your skin tone. It doesn't necessarily mean you veer away from some colors ha, just pick the right shade para you won't look pale or magmukang maitim ung kamay mo (happened to me! Agh!)
Yup, rule is pretty similar to makeup. Hahah me too; I like silver, but sadly, it makes my hands look 'dirty' so I stay away from it when it comes to nail polish. Yeah, that matching rule is an old rule, but I never followed it that's why I did not include it here. :D
DeleteI'm a fan of nail polishes but I have this problem of acquiring a few bottles of them only to find a few weeks later that they have hardened down on me! So lately I'm sticking to smaller bottles of nail polish (perfect for just a few uses) and using them often till it's empty. For that, I love Etude House for their cute bottles and nice colors. Would also like to try the small-bottle versions of Orly and Sally Hansen nail polishes, and also the Essie ones.
ReplyDeleteEssie has wonderful nudes! I'm like you as I prefer smaller bottles now; I'm not really an avid nail polish wearer so I can't finish a bottle right away; not even in 2 years! It's nice to know that Girlstuff, Max Factor, and Orly have been making tiny polishes!
DeleteI seldom wear nail polish but when i do i use nude colors. I think it makes my fingers look tidy and simply pretty. I have small nails and as i read this i thought "kaya naman pala bagay sakin yun nude shades eh"
ReplyDeleteI like nudes for my fingers too because it looks classy :D
DeleteI love nail polish though it can be tricky to apply it on your own, looks great on left hand fail on right. Btw anyone here who try matte nail polish of matte surface oils??
ReplyDeleteHaha. Happens to me all the time. Haven't tried the matte thing you mentioned. Matte surface oils? Is that a brand?
DeleteSo far, what works for me is those nail polish shades that are frosted. Frosted bronze, maroon, brown, red. For non frosted, it's the dark colors that work for me, red, black. I am yet to try other shades and types of nail polish. You're right when you wrote here, Ms. Martha, that nail polish is an accessory, and you can choose whatever looks good on you.
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing! :D
DeleteI don't usually put nail polish but my mom & my cousins do. That's why I am so interested why girls love nail polish. But I also research about some cute & fancy designs of nails, and I love it. I also know about how to apply nail polish - the LOVE technique. I hope you have a great weekend. :) God bless!

ReplyDeleteAwesome! Care to share how to do that love technique? :)
DeleteThanks for this color guide Ms. Martha! :) I'm such a big fan of nail polish and I always wear one for me it makes my nails look pretty, I like nude colors but occasionally I would love to wear bold colors just to make a statement. I usually put a top coat of Caronia nail hardener and top coat before I put the nail polish this will lessen the yellow looking thingy (don't know whats it called) when you remove your polish and it will also help the polish not to chip off or crack quickly.
ReplyDeleteI love caronia's base and top coat, and nail hardener. Thanks for the awesome tip; will try this soon. :)
Deletei also love to put nail polish! i love bold colors. haha. kaso nakakahiya minsan kasi it's too loud. pero i like it kasi nakakaputi. :)
ReplyDeleteAfter makeup, nail polishes are my addiction. I have around 200 nail polishes to date. :) I have thrown away some already. Anyway, I don't really follow rules in terms of nail polish colors. I try it on myself. If I like it, I'll continue the color for the rest of my nails. If I don't I'll switch to another color. I love matte and frosted colors. I love blue and pinks. I so love glitters, but it's so hard to remove. I don't use gel polish because it's hard to remove as well, given that I change my polish every week. I sometimes do nail art if I am in the mood. Another nail polish application tip. Put petroleum jelly around your nails so it's easier to remove excess polish. :)
ReplyDeleteI'm a fan of nail polish! But according to some nail salons, excessive use of nail polish changes the colors of your nails into yellow. It is advisable to change nail polish every 2-3 weeks. For my skin tone (light to medium), red and navy blue shades suits best. The lighter the skin tone, the darker the shade of the polish. :)
ReplyDeleteMy skin tone is kind of tricky since many would say that it's fair/white but others would say it's yellowish. :/ I'd love a polish though that would make my skin look darker, so hello metallics :) And thanks for that diagram, Ms. Martha. I need it in my life!
ReplyDeletei am not into colorful nail polishes unlike my younger sibs.. siguro dahil nagmamature na ako? hehehe.. I opt using natural shade.. Touch of Tan, Touch of Beige and Gray ones..
ReplyDeletedati I played with nail polish kasi sa cosmetology class ituturo lahat ng basic style ng design ng nail application dinadaya ko lang using cuticle oil hahaha nabibisto ako ng teacher ko =)
dati kuntento na ako sa french tip malinis kasi tignan. I stopped using nail polish 2-3 years ago kasi nag yeyellow na ang nails ko.. but I am back into nail polishing ulit =)
Let me know what you think of this post! :)
