Welcome to part 2! In here, I shall tell you all about sunblock ingredients, types, and the most awaited part: my recommendations.
There are different types of sunblock to suit every skin type. These are:
GEL- water- based; perfect to retain moisture on the epidermal layer of the skin; best for oily skin
LOTION- moisturizing; emollient; perfect for people with dry skin
SPRAYS (aka Invisible Sunblocks)- gives a light sheen to skin; perfect for people who dislike white casts caused by cream and lotion sunblocks; best used on body
People with Normal skin may take their pick from any of these sunblock types.
SUNBLOCK INGREDIENTS
There are a lot of FDA- approved ingredients, but the most common and most effective are: Titanium Dioxide, Zinc Oxide, Mexoryl, Avobenzone, Octyl Salicylate, and Oxybenzone.
Unfortunately, these ingredients can only block UVB rays, except Zinc Oxide, the only known ingredient that effectively blocks UVA and UVB rays.
SUNBLOCK TYPES
Sunblocks are usually labeled as 'BROAD SPECTRUM', meaning they claim that they can protect you from UVA and UVB rays. In reality, this is not true for all sunblocks, as UVA is a tough and persistent ray, and most sunblocks cannot block this ray. Make sure your sunblock has ZINC OXIDE, MEXORYL, or AVOBENZONE to ensure that your skin is protected from the sun's most harmful UV ray.
There is no such thing as 'WATERPROOF SUNBLOCK'. Sunblock is applied topically, and it is inevitable that it will come off when you swim and sweat. There are only 'WATER- RESISTANT SUNBLOCKS'. But still, they should be reapplied after swimming and perspiring, and a couple of minutes after sun exposure.
SUNBLOCK APPLICATION GUIDELINES
1. Make sure you apply a shot glass full amount to your entire body. Most people do not apply the right amount of sunblock. Less amount means less protection.
2. Make sure your entire body is covered with sunblock
3. It's better to apply sunblock on top of everything (makeup included). Applying it underneath your usual skin products will only dilute the sunblock.
