Sumptuous Sundays: Yabu: House of Katsu

Last week, I was invited by Denise Cabotage, Brand Manager for Yabu: House of Katsu, to try their bespoke Tonkatsu recipes. It's all the rage, especially in Twitter, nowadays so I decided to travel all the way to SM Megamall to find out what makes their Tonkatsu legendary.

PRICE RANGE: P100-P575.00

Tonkatsu is serious business for Yabu. It's not just your ordinary fried food because they actually had Chef Kazuya Takeda, a Tonkatsu master, create their dishes for them! It is no secret that the Japanese are meticulous in everything they do, so expect deep fried perfection in your visit!

Condiments plate on the table: A pot of tonkatsu sauce, paper, chili oil, sesame oil (?), spicy salt, sesame seed oil and cream dressing for the cabbage strips

THE ART OF MAKING YABU'S TONKATSU SAUCE

A few seconds after the waiter has gotten your order, you will be served with a cup of what seems like a spoonful of fresh and toasted sesame seeds and pestle.

Grind the sesame seeds using the wooden pestle. While you're at it, savor the nutty and smoky aroma of freshly ground sesame seeds. :)

Grab some tonkatsu sauce and pour generously onto your crushed sesame seeds.

Voila! Congratulations, you're now one step closer to enjoying Yabu's mouthwatering tonkatsu!

Kurobuta Tonkatsu (P575.00)- Kurobuta is the "Wagyu" of pork. It's very tender, juicy, buttery, and has a melt-in-your-mouth texture.

What I love about their tonkatsu is it doesn't taste dry and oily. I don't know what magic they do to it, but the entire thing stays crunchy even after a good 20- 30 minutes. :D

Seafood Set 1 (P475.00)- includes Dory fish, squid, and shrimp

Molten Chocolate Cake- lightly sweet and sized just right. The perfect ending to a hearty meal.

Service is pretty fast, and the waiters are nice. It definitely made my entire experience worthwhile. However, if the place is pretty packed, expect a good 20 minutes before your order arrives. Good Tonkatsu takes time.

I am very satisfied with the food: Size is just right and the quality is awesome. I will definitely go back. Wait, I just went back yesterday! :)))

MUST-TRY: Yabu Tonkatsu Curry; Tonkatsu Rice Bowls

TIPS: Unlimited cabbage!!!! Just ask the waiter for a refill.
Mix the oil and creamy dressing on the cabbage. It tastes so good that you'd actually think you're eating expensive salad!

Please visit YABU: HOUSE OF KATSU on Facebook and inquire about their meals.
