Why Is Kojic Acid The Better Lightening Ingredient?

When Kojie San made its debut in the world of skin whitening and lightening, it immediately became a hit because not only it is effective, but also gentle; Kojic Acid remains one of the preferred (and arguably the top choice) of a lot of Filipinas when it comes to whitening and lightening. I know a lot of friends who are loyal users of Kojic Acid; I myself also prefer Kojic Acid soap on my armpits and knees for no-fuss exfoliation and to maintain the evenness on those areas.

So why is Kojic Acid the better lightening ingredient, really? Kojie San revealed to us why in a quaint tete-a-tete last week.

L-R: Host Janeena Chan, Dr. Lindsay Torralba, Marketing Head for Kojie San Tricia Gregorio, and Celebrity Makeup Artist RB Chanco

According to a presentation by Dr. Lindsay, Kojic Acid, compared to its equally popular whitening counterparts, Papaya and Glutathione, is better; the three ingredients actually whiten and lighten skin in their own terms, but Papaya can be drying to the skin and Glutathione can be very expensive, not to mention it's something that's more effective if supported orally. Kojic Acid, on the other hand, is gentler, may produce results faster, and can even be used by those with sensitive skin (but should be used with necessary precautions) compared to most whitening ingredients. Kojic Acid is sourced from either mushrooms or rice; the latter is safer so look for a skin lightening/whitening range that derives Kojic Acid from rice - Kojie San is a great example.

I have also learned in the event that in dermatology, lightening and whitening have different meanings; I am aware that these are marketing terms used interchangeably and depending on the country, but I've always believed that there are minor differences between the two and it has been confirmed; according to the presentation, Whitening is a complete change in color, while Lightening refers to the evening of skin tone specifically the targeting of hyper pigmented skin areas.

So if you have uneven skin tone, tan lines from your recent beach trip, or post- acne marks, Kojic Acid is a great ingredient to choose in getting back your evenness because it's generally safe and effective; you can even use it for weekly exfoliation and you don't have to search far and wide nor shell out a lot for Kojic Acid because it is readily available in drugstores.

Such an interesting event! I learned a lot!

  1. My sister introduce Kojie San to me way back in college and my skin really whitened or lightened or let's just say it makes my skin illuminate but when I am already looking for a job and "need" to put on make up on my face I started to have breakouts so I stopped it for a while coz I am using other soaps to cure my acne. Is it okay to use kojie san along with the soap I am using to cure my acne? Please let me know. Plus it's really shocking to know it's from mushroom or rice. Oh my! Amazing!

    1. Not really sure if you can combine kojie san with another pretty strong skin care such as anti-acne skin care. I think it would be safer to use them alternately and allow your skin to breathe in between. Experiment and find the technique that works for you. :)

  2. I initially thought that lightening and whitening were two synonymous words, but that doesn't seem to be the case. :) I love Kojie San's kojic acid soap because it really does what it promises. It's my go-to soap for when I get harsh tan lines. :) I haven't tried their line of body lotions, but I do use a variety of products with kojic acid content to somehow counteract the effects of daily exposure to the sun, no matter how long. :)

  5. I've been using kojic acid soap for 3 years now and I've seen a big difference from my skin.it is much whiter than before especially my face and tan lines. it doesn't just kept my skin lighter it also keeps my skin healthy and out of pimples. My friends told me to stop using it because it may harm my skin maybe not now but as I grew old because of too much chemicals.I'm glad to hear that it is made of rice or mushroom. Thank you for this
