THE VERDICT:

The Ordinary may very we be considered as the breakthrough skin care brand of the year. Made by Deciem, a Chicago- based skin care company, The Ordinary rose to fame with their high potency, high actives content products at a price that most can afford.

I've used these for around two months and now here's your much- awaited review.

WHAT IS IT:

The Ordinary boasts of clean, straightforward apothecary- inspired packaging that gives that pharmacy vibe, giving you the impression that the products are good and effective. Here are some of their best- sellers:

Natural Moisturizing Factors + HA (Around P500.00+)

A moisturizer that contains emollients that are native to the skin plus Hyaluronic Acid that helps retain moisture.

Caffeine + EGCG Eye Serum (Around P600.00+)

An eye serum that helps lift and firm the under eyes, plus provides an energizing effect.

Niacinamide + Zinc (Around P600.00+)

A skin serum with high concentration of Niacinamide and Zinc that help rejuvenate the skin and control acne.

Cold- Pressed Morrocan Argan Oil

Pure Argan Oil for general skin moisturizing.

I love the packaging and look of the products; they don't look affordable at all nor cheap; perhaps this is also an allure of The Ordinary: thanks to its chic look, it makes you feel like you're using expensive products without actually spending for it.

Again, I've used the following for around 2 months and here are my results.

HOW IS IT? IS IT EFFECTIVE?

L-R: Argan Oil, Niacinamide + Zinc, Natural Moisturizing Factors + HA, and Caffeine + EGCG

CAFFEINE + EGCG EYE SERUM- This is a brownish gel with a slight cooling effect. It instantly gives a firming effect and a little goes a long way. Careful not to get it into your eyes as it stings for a little. It is unscented.

After 2 months of usage: Eyes look firm and smoother, but did not reduce dark circles.

ARGAN OIL- a legit Argan Oil because it is unscented. FYI, real Argan oil does not have scent.

After 2 months of usage: It is not my first time to use Argan Oil on my face so I know that it helps provides intense nourishment and moisture to the skin. Same experience with The Ordinary's Argan Oil. I use it when my skin is feeling particularly dry and dull.

NATURAL MOISTURIZING FACTORS + HA- A light cream with a slight goopy consistency. It needs to be worked into the skin thoroughly for better absorption. It is unscented.

After 2 months of usage: I did not reach 2 months because I broke out after a week. There's something in the ingredients that caused this and I have yet to pinpoint it.

NIACINAMIDE + ZINC- I'm a huge lover of Niacinamide and I was thrilled to know that The Ordinary has a product that has a generous concentration of it; plus points that there is Zinc that helps combat acne. This is a liquid gel that somewhat 'foams' up when you work it onto your skin; it should be worked onto the skin properly. The special consistency does not work with a lot of night creams, but I find that a thick night cream works with it.

After 2 months of usage: My skin cleared up and it looked good after two weeks. However, no significant improvement after that.

In sum, The Ordinary is not that special in my opinion; I've used the products consistently and they have produced desirable results after two or three weeks, but the improvement stopped; the products just became basic skin care items that provided hydration and moisture. I'm still perplexed as to why this has happened considering that the concentration of actives are high; perhaps there's something with the formula that's preventing the actives from producing results consistently?

Or, I could just be one of those people whose skin didn't match The Ordinary's products well. I know some who sing praises about their products; I guess there are just some products that don't work for you! I'm just glad that these are not expensive. The only thing that worked really well for me was the Argan oil. How I wish these worked consistently for me!

  1. I thought they're for everybody. Haha...
I've eyeing the Niacinamide+Zinc but I also didn't want to jump in the bandwagon. I'm glad you did a review after long months of usage. Thank you!

  2. I love the straightforward apothecary-inspired packaging. I've always been fond of minimalism so that's a bonus. I do hope, however, that they'd improve this line. I can sense that there's still some room for improvement based on your take. Thanks for this, Ms. Martha!

  7. I've wanted to try The Ordinary but I don't know what to use for my acne because their is Niacinamide and Salicylic. Good thing there are reviews like this if it relly works and I also wanted products that bring long time results rather than 2 weeks.

  9. I guess I belong to the lucky bunch whose skin is hiyang with the ordinary. It changed my skin drastically and has helped managing acne and blemishes. I've been using Niacinamide for more than two months and I love what it does to my skin and has made my blemishes less visible, I also observed that I feel less oily nowadays. I've been using the Lactic AHA 10% too as my exfoliator and has kept blackheads on my nose under control. The caffeine solution is so-so but at least it helps my eye area hydrated. I'm eyeing the salicylic acid next.
