FENTY SKIN REVIEW: Celebrity Skin Care Line Done Right

THE VERDICT:

If there's anything good that happened in the year 2020, it's that people have finally had a heightened appreciation for skin care. But it was bound to happen. Skin care got just as popular as makeup in 2020 and by then, a lot of celebrity skin care lines have already come up with their very own skin care lines to be there right before the trend explodes.

I've always had a slight aversion towards skin care lines made by celebrities; celebrity makeup products, I'm fine with those, but with skin care, I feel that it's more of a sales project than an expertise and are generally celebrity- priced drugstore products. Because if there's one thing I've learned after 11 years of beauty blogging, it's that brands that are focused on and well- known for creating good skin care should be trusted first and foremost.

Then come Rihanna's new venture this 2021: FENTY SKIN, the much awaited follow up to her world famous cosmetic line, Fenty Beauty. 

Just to get it out of the way, this set was sent to me by Sephora for a review. Exciting, but I still had my aversion because as mentioned, I have a huge distrust towards skin care brands that are not really skin care- driven at its core. I've been using it for a month now and all I can say is, Rihanna must be really passionate with hydration and Fenty Skin and this kinda' changed my attitude towards celebrity skin care lines!

 

Fenty Skin is the new, skin care brand of Rihanna. Inspired by her globe- trotting activities and dreams of creating an approachable, no- fuss skin care line that she wish she had encountered before, Rihanna drew inspiration from rituals, ingredients, and other brands from all over the world and came up Fenty Skin, a skin care range for every one, every color, and every age. Rihanna believes in a solid skin care routine comprised of essentials and hydration, that's why she came up with the first 5 essential skin care products with hero ingredients namely Hyaluronic Acid and Niacinamide to keep skin plump, healthy, and even. At the heart of Fenty Beauty is also sustainability and waste- reduction as well as clean, cruelty- free beauty.

First, that lilac color story is just so soothing; it gives me that clean feel, chic vibe, and frankly, it makes the minimalist lover in me very happy.

I have the pilot products that were first launched by the brand: Total Cleans'R Remove-It-All Cleanser, Fat Water, Flash Nap Instant Revival Eye Gel Cream, Hydra Vizor Invisible Broad Spectrum SPF 30 Sunscreen Moisturizer, and Instant Reset Overnight Recovery Gel-Cream.

What's nice about Rihanna's products is two of the biggest in terms of packaging and most likely will be used often come in refillable packaging; these are Hydra Vizor SPF 30 Sunscreen Moisturizer and Instant Reset Overnight Recovery Gel-Cream.

The sunscreen moisturizer comes in a tube and a hollow tube where you insert the product and turn it on or off through the dial at the bottom of the tube. You can just easily pop out and replace the refill when you run out.

Next is the night cream. This cream comes with a recyclable base that holds the refill jar in place. However, this one is quite hard to figure out how to put all the parts together, but I did it after a couple of tries so yay! The packaging comes with a spatula that's cleverly tucked away on the cap. Lovely.

Here are the products. From left to right, we have:

Total Cleans'R Remove-It-All Cleanser- a creamy cleanser that produces a soft lather to declog facial debris, remove excess oil, and clean the skin. It has Barbados Cherry and Coconut- inspired cleansers. A little is enough to produce a nice lather and what's good about this is it never left my face dry nor taut. It has a luscious vanilla scent too. The cover of the tub cannot be removed; you just have to turn it like a dial to open the small hole in the middle of the cap to dispense the product. Some people don't like this packaging format, but I do because that means no more flying or misplaced facial foam caps for me.

Hydra Vizor SPF 30 Sunscreen Moisturizer- a sunscreen and moisturizer in one. A lightweight cream with SPF yet does not leave a white cast. It also has a pink tone in it to even out and brighten the skin before makeup. It's a bit heavy on the face because of the SPF ingredient in it so I make sure to apply sparingly. This has a desert melon scent according to Rihanna and it smells really good!

Flash Nap Instant Revival Eye Gel- a lightweight, gel-cream type eye cream with Horse Chestnut that reduces puffiness, Persian Silk Tree extract that helps reduce fatigue, and Green Tea to fight dullness and provide antioxidant benefits. This one is very hydrating, sets easily and can be perfectly used under makeup, and has a nice cooling effect, which I really love. I feel that this helps de-puff my eyes effectively and my eyes looked very hydrated and smooth for the past month. Finally, another good eye cream discovery-it's been a while since I used a really good one.

Fat Water Pore Refining Toner Serum- a toner-serum hybrid that hydrates, clarifies, and brightens the skin. Ideal for all skin types and non-comedogenic. 

Seriously, this is my most favorite item from Fenty Skin. It's more of an essence than a toner so I think mother Rihanna should rethink that description, but in my opinion, this is the most legit essence in terms of texture because it's not messy, liquid but not runny therefore can be applied easily by hands, which is how essences are marketed to be used, has a luscious vanilla fragrance, viscous, but non- sticky, and leaves my face feeling plump, hydrated, and refreshed. A lot of negative reviews pinpointed that the product is too thick and takes a while to be absorbed, but the secret is to use just a small amount because it's always enough; then spread the product all over your face and pat on until it gets absorbed. With just this product alone, I have noticed that my skin got better and looked more plump and healthier. It's also a lazy girl's multitasking skin care product because it's toner, serum, and liquid moisturizer in one.

Instant Reset Overnight Recovery Gel-Cream- has Kalahari Melon Oil and Baobab extracts for intense, 8-hr. hydration. It has a semi-creamy moisturizer with a gel- like texture. It's light, but very moisturizing and hydrating. It has a tendency to feel a bit heavy because of the oil extract in it, but it's what makes it ideal for night use. It has a lovely floral-melon scent and keeps my skin supple while I sleep without clogging my pores.

After a month of using Fenty Skin

This is my skin after one month of consistently using Fenty Skin. The entire range is focused on hydration and brightening, and I'm happy to report that my skin tone got more even, the texture felt more supple and smoother, my skin looked bouncier, and just looks healthier and better overall. My experience with Fenty Skin is a testament to the miracles that hydration can do to the skin.

I'm very happy with my experience with Fenty Skin because it's an intensely hydrating skin care line-anything hydrating, I love and will try-and it's a no-nonsense skin care line. 

The reason why I think it's celebrity skin care done right is because it doesn't feel like just another private- labeled celebrity skin care: the packaging is sensitive to the needs of the environment, the products are versatile without sacrificing quality, and Rihanna tried her best to search for and include other, new skin care ingredients that are just as effective as the common ones we know. Most of all, the products are effective!

I recommend this to those with normal, dry, and oily/normal skin types. If you could only try one product, I suggest get Fat Water Pore Refining Toner Serum or Flash Nap Instant Revival Eye Gel!
