When we think of being an environment warrior, what we're picturing most of the time is we have to be physically present in activities that promote environment conservation such as tree planting, waterway clean ups, and environmental protests. It's great if you can participate in those too (and I highly encourage you to!), but don't be intimidated because it's not the only way to participate in environment conservation and protection initiatives!
In your own way, you can be an environmental warrior even right at home. Here are three simple ways how you can contribute to environment protection and conservation without leaving your community or even your home!
Report illegal environmental trade or activities concerning the environment
- Do you spot your neighbor doing something suspicious like regularly dumping seemingly harmful waste in waterways nearby plantations/forests, or within your community? Do you think that a certain online seller is engaged in illegal wildlife trade? Don't hesitate, report!
You can file a complaint or investigation via NGOs and DENR. For NGOs, depending on their expertise, they might be able to completely assist you or refer you to the proper channel where you can file a complaint.
For DENR, all you have to do is just send them an email at aksyonkalikasan@denr.gov.ph or inquire via 0917-868-DENR or 0917-885-DENR.
Volunteer or host local efforts
Be on the lookout for community activities that you can participate in or organize your own. Organizing your own environment- friendly activities and efforts don't have to be grand; in fact, you can start with your friends or family. You can also organize workshops or seminars for the youth to teach them about the importance of taking care of the environment (this can be done online too!).
Just be sure that you have completed and accomplished all the necessary documents and requirements before proceeding with your chosen activity.
Support brands that support environment conservation initiatives
A lot of brands recognize the importance of supporting charities, most especially those concerned with the environment so a lot of them would partner with environmental organizations to show support, making simple purchasing tasks such as buying food, toiletries, to sending packages even more rewarding. One example is DHL.
Sending packages abroad can be even more rewarding because DHL has partnered with Haribon Foundation for the ADOPT-A-SEEDLING PROGRAM.
How does it go? Every time you send a package via DHL, P5.00 gets donated to Haribon Foundation, which supports their reforestation efforts through the program. Haribon Foundation will be planting indigenous trees and populating forest areas to help rehabilitate millions of degraded forest areas.
The initiative started on April 9 and runs until June 30, 2022.
