THE VERDICT:

I have this love-hate relationship with our tropical weather. I love it because summertime means beach time, and it's always a season to look forward to if you're someone who's living in the tropics, but hate it at the same time because it's not friendly to skin and makeup. No amount of waterproof, water- resistant, sweat proof, or even bullet proof foundation/powder can seem to withstand tropical summer, especially now that the days have become extremely hotter.

For this season, I suggest that you go for powder foundation or tinted moisturizer. Choose something in a lightweight formulation, and with SPF.

Here's a suggestion from Make Up For Ever: The White Definition Powder Foundation. It's a groundbreaking product formulated to suit Asian skin tones and weather conditions. It's a brightening powder foundation that's yellow- toned, lightweight, protective, and heat and humidity- resistant.

Description from Make Up For Ever:

Created in France in partnership with Japanese laboratories, White Definition is truly the expert instant brightening powder foundation Asian women have been waiting for.
It's state-of-the-art formula, which contains an optimum blend of the finest-quality powders and pigments, and also incorporates high-level UVA/UVB protection, reconciles three apparently irreconcilable qualities to ensure the professionally perfect result for which MAKE UP FOREVER is renowned.

White Definition comes in a sophisticated and sleek white glossy casing.

What are the ingredients that make White Definition an exceptional powder foundation? Check out the cornerstone ingredients:

Synthetic and Lamellar Mica- uniquely blended in the White Def powder foundation; helps blur imperfections and catch light in all directions for luminous and flawless- looking skin

Sodium Hyaluronate and High- Grade Silicon Powder- SH maintains skin's moisture levels, while finely- milled, high- grade Silicon powders effectively absorb shine for longwearing coverage sans the heavy look and feel.

SPF 30 PA++- broad spectrum SPF protects skin from the sun's harmful UVA and UVB rays

Having worked in the industry for over 25 years, Dany Sanz, founder of Make Up For Ever, recognizes the fact that even perfect products require flawless application techniques and the right makeup tools. That's why White Definition comes with a specially- designed sponge to deliver any coverage you prefer:

This side is called the NBR side: a rubbery part of the sponge that's meant to deliver full coverage.

The other side is called the flocked side: a fluffier and softer side that's meant to deliver light coverage.

White Definition comes in 4 Asian- friendly shades--all carefully chosen by discerning Asian women who only want the best from their powder foundation. The darkest shade of the powder is Sand 40.

Texture is a bit chalky, and fallout is significant. It is understandable since Silica, its main component, is a non- creamy type of powder. Coverage is light to full.

However, the shade of the powder changes when its finally applied on skin. Take a second look at the powder pan's pic. It seems dark and apt for tan- skinned ladies, but it's surprisingly light on this swatch. The reason behind this phenomenon is the high concentration of SPF that's greatly affecting the powder's shade. But at least it does not look chalky and paper white on skin. Thanks to the powder's light- reflecting properties.

Here's my bare skin with just concealer on

Since I've mentioned that even great products require the right tools and techniques, I've found a way to make White Definition wearable for tan- skinned gals.

Using a stippling brush: Swirl the brush lightly on the pan, and then tap off excess. Apply powder onto your skin in a light, swirling motion. Build coverage if desired.

Using the Sponge: Using the NBR or flocked side (sponge part you're gonna use depends on the coverage you want on a particular day), lightly sweep the sponge on the pan and dab the product gently onto your skin. After dabbing powder all over your face, gently run the sponge on it to take away excess powder.

I also did a video tutorial regarding how to work MUFE's White Definition Powder Foundation. Sorry for stuttering and the frequent pauses. It's my first- ever Youtube video! It's pretty long, but you could always fast forward it to the tutorial parts. Enjoy watching! :D

I find that one layer is enough for me as it has a tendency to turn me into a shade lighter than my skin tone when I apply too much of it. You're probably wondering how one layer can last me all- throughout the day. Well, its finely- milled silicon powder does a fantastic job at keeping oilies at bay. I still get oily after a few hours though, but not the slick kind of oily. I prefer using this during daytime so I can take advantage of its SPF. It's light- reflecting properties work so well with natural lighting too. Check out the pic!

Other concerns:

** If I still find it too light for me (which happens most of the time because I've turned a shade darker due to frequent swimming), I just use my skin matching powders and then apply it on top for a glowing look. It makes a great illuminating powder because it yields a very natural glow to the face. It's also best used to remedy face bases that turn gray or ashy on yellow- toned gals.

** I wouldn't advise everyone to use water on White Definition because: it will just create dry patches on the powder; this particular product is intended for dry use only; it will cause the powder to turn blotchy on your skin; you're just going to give bacteria more reasons to live on the pan, sponge, and your skin. In general, I don't like wetting powder foundation even if it is suggested by the box instructions. It just makes the coverage look thicker and pixelated, ergo fake. :p

The powder foundation could've been love for me if not for its limited shade range. I appreciate the fact that every shade has yellow undertone, but I find its shade selection too Oriental for my skin tone. Not all Asians have fair and porcelain skin, 'ya know? If you're a gal who has NC15 to NC40 skin tone, you will find a shade that suits you from the line. If they release darker shades, I will buy this again because its quality is incredible.
