FAN MAIL FRIDAYS: My Current Skin Care Regimen

Hello guys! Hope you're all having a wonderful Friday. For this segment, I am going to update you guys on my current skin care routine. Thanks Kris for your question. :)

Hi Ms Martha,

I'm a beginner in makeup but I've loved them since I was a little girl. I've been reading and commenting your blog posts under the name Kris.
I read the post The Journey to Perfect Skin (Feb 2012) and I learned that our skin could get used to the products we apply on it  and subsequently render the them less effective. In this regard, could you share to us your updated skin care routine?
I would love to know your routine so that I can compare it to mine and make adjustments if necessary.
Kris

Hi Kris!

Wow! You must be doing a lot of backreading! I am proud and happy to know that you are thoroughly enjoying my posts. :) Anyway, going back to your question, yes, our skin could get used to any product, most especially if we use it for more than 3 months so the best thing to do is to switch brands.

I use different brands, but I make sure they're apt for my skin type, and they target my concerns which are the following: 1. Dullness 2. Hyperpigmentation 3. Pimples. I was told by a dermatologist friend that it's completely okay to use different brands all at once as long as they're meant for your skin and skin concerns, but some say it would still be best to stick to a range if you want to see more significant results. It still boils down to how your skin reacts to any product or regimen. As for my skin, I find that it reacts better to various ingredients so I prefer using different brands and products. Bottomline, you have to know your skin. :)

My current facial wash is Snoe's Shoo Zit Don't Bother Me Wash Away Those Zits. Aside from the fact that it's the only facial wash I have as of the moment, I like using it because it's in gel form and it does not aggravate my skin's oiliness. I use it during day and night.

DAYTIME ROUTINE

Shiseido White Lucent Spot Intensive Serum+- I apply it on my post- acne marks right after toning. It dries up quickly so it works for me whether I'm in a hurry or if I have time to do my makeup.

Kiehl's Ultra Light Daily UV Protection Sunblock- I only use this when I am going to wear powder foundation as I find that it affects the staying power of liquid foundation/bases. If I am not using this, I make sure that my preferred liquid base has SPF in it.

I use two toners on a daily basis, by the way

Kiehl's Ultra Facial Oil- Free Toner- My overall toner
Kiehl's Blue Herbal Astringent Lotion- I rub it on my zits to help speed up their healing time

Shu Uemura UV/UB Underbase- Instead of regular sunblock, I use this product because it is a makeup primer infused with SPF. I get sun protection without having to worry about crappy makeup. :)

Kiehl's Ultra Facial Cream- I also apply this in conjunction with the sunblock, and if I'm wearing powder foundation only. I don't use it when I'm going to wear liquid foundation because the latter is emollient enough to act as a moisturizer. Besides, moisturizers affect the drying time of liquid makeup.

NIGHT TIME ROUTINE

Shu Uemura Cleansing Oil- My trusted makeup remover. The one I'm using right now is Shu Uemura Ultim8 Cleansing Oil. It's very economical because I don't have to use a separate makeup remover for my eyes as it is enough to dissolve any type of makeup, even waterproof makeup.

Estee Lauder Advanced Night Repair Eye Serum- I just acquired this recently and I'm still road testing it. It's an interesting addition to my routine because it's the first eye serum I've ever used.

Estee Lauder Advanced Night Repair Eye Cream- It's a quick- absorbing gel-cream product and I like it's cooling effect. I'm only in my first week of usage with this product. :)

Clarins Double Serum- I'm turning 25 and like what I've said in one of my posts, the turning point or the time when your skin starts to age considerably is when you turn 25, hence I'm starting to incorporate some anti-aging products in my skin care routine. What I like about this serum is it's a preventive anti-aging serum meant for girls aged 25 and up. Suffice to say, it's a gentler anti-aging product. Heck, I don't have wrinkles yet so I don't feel the need to use tougher anti-aging treatments. Also, I'm a fan of natural skin care products and I like that this serum from Clarins is primarily plant- based. :)

Kiehl's Blue Herbal Spot Treatment- I pat this on my zits and leave it on overnight.

SKIN CARE ROUTINE BOOSTERS

Twice a week, I incorporate three products to get rid of stubborn dirt and dead skin cells on the surface, and I use leave- on treatments to further enhance the efficacy of my usual skin care products.

Snoe Awesome Poresome Microdermabrasion Scrub- It's my fave face scrub at the moment. I like it because it really makes my skin glow after every use, and I feel that its gritty texture really eradicates every trace of dirt from my skin.

Jericho Premium Facial Collagen Mask- I leave it on my face for 5 minutes because the Sulfur- rich Dead Sea Water ingredient is good for minimizing breakouts.

Laneige Water Sleeping Pack_EX- Since I tend to skip moisturizers, I sleep with this product on twice a week to give my skin a good dose of hydration. It keeps my skin from flaking and feeling rough. :)

There you go! Please do share your skin care routine with me too! :)

  2. Hi Ms M, I'm so glad my fan mail is featured! Thanks for your answer. I had zero idea that our skin can get used to beauty products in as short as 3 months! Before this post, I never completely understood why a lot of girls alternate different moisturizers, toners and even shampoos etc.. I thought it was an expensive habit. Little did I know na may good reason pala behind it.

I have very basic skin care routine at the moment pero I'm planning to modify that. I use Garnier facial wash, toner, moisturizer and powder. I know that Shu Uemura and Kiehl's products are a bit expensive so I'll start with something that's within my budget. Like you said, I should know my skin and how it will react so I'm going to give myself time for testing. Thank you so much for sharing your skin care routine. This will definitely be an excellent guide for a lot of your readers.

  5. this is a very helpful post Ms. Martha. Will you be doing po a separate review on the estee lauder eye products? I have dark circles around my eyes and bags big enough to carry the troubles of the world (lol, drama!) I have tried various eye products enough for me to not mind coughing out a few more moolah for one that will work for sure! :)

  6. Hi Martha, do you find it essential to follow the three-step system which is to cleanse, exfoliate, and moisturize?

  7. Thanks for sharing this, Ms. M. Sure this skincare is costly yet effective. I got a sample size of Estee Lauder's Night cream, and I must agree with the cooling effect it gives. Among the list, its the Snoe Awesome Poresome Scrub is the one I wanna try coz I guess it's the only one I can afford. Lol! :) Well, I always want to try Laneige if it's really worth the hype. And as always, you never fail to amaze me on how you answer fan mails :)

My current skin regimen is just the usual - scrub and exfoliate with St Ives apricot scrub alternated with Kojic Soap, then Eskinol with Dalacin C as a toner and finally, Burt's Bees intense hydrating cream . :)

  13. Mayla: You're welcome! And thanks for sharing yours too. :D

Ohms: It's da bomb, no? :D It's the only facial product that I don't mind spending on!

Arya: Then you should start going for corrective treatments. :)

Jec: I swear by that Shiseido thing! :D

Angela: Awesome! I'm almost done with my first tub--that's how much I love it! Now onto my second tub. :)

Tine: Kiehl's is my HG brand for skin care. :) Thanks for reading too. :)

May: actually, it's cleanse, tone, and moisturize. Yes, it's essential because it's the most basic regimen of all. :) Exfoliate should be done 2- 3 times a week only. :)

Detsy: Yes, I'll be doing a separate review for that too. :) I'll let you know if it's worth the dough! :)

Desire: Thank you, my sweet! You have a pretty good regimen. :)

Marsied: See? I told you it's awesome haha! :D Glad to know that my recommendations worked for you. :)

Eloise: Hi there! Late reply haha! To ease up flaking, you may want to use gentle exfoliators followed by a heavy moisturizing cream to ease the flakiness. Don't ever peel the hanging skin or else, you might end up scratching it!

Kris: You're welcome dear! And thanks for sharing your routine :)
