My first- ever post for The Beauty Junkee
4 years ago, when I started this blog, I didn't have any idea on what to do with my life other than writing about the things I love through The Beauty Junkee. During my first few months, I was in front of my laptop almost 10 hours a day, blogging about makeup, food, skin care, pets, and anything and everything that piqued my interest. I started TBJ when I was 20 years old. When people asked me what I do I would happily reply "I blog. I'm a blogger" and they had this certain look in their faces, almost giving away their thoughts saying "What dafuq is a blogger? Is it even something worth saying? Psh. Typical early twenties sheltered girl. No career. No direction." But I didn't care-blogging made me happy. That's what matters.
Fast forward four years later. If I would meet these people again, I'd look them in the eye and say with conviction: "Hi, we meet again. I am Martha Sta. Barbara, blogger at The Beauty Junkee. Oh yes siree, blogging is the best thing that has ever happened to me because I am doing what I love while sustaining myself and inspiring people in the process. In short, I am in the best position of my life." :)
If God will give me a chance to go back again to my 20 year old self, I would not change anything I did: I'd still put up The Beauty Junkee, pass up on T.V. and film opportunities, say and do the wrong things, and roll with so many punches, uppercuts, and flying kicks-I'd still take them anyway for if not for them, I wouldn't know my purpose, and that is to empower and bring out the best in people...through makeup! :)
So, my dear readers (silent or active), companies, stores, and brands, happy 4 years to us. Thank you for keeping up with this blog and with me. I may have said this already, but I'll still say it again: Whatever The Beauty Junkee is now would not possible if not for your patronage and trust, and thank you for helping me come up with everything I have right now. :)

My favorite post from The Beauty Junkee would be the one where you talked about spotting fake Mac products. To me, being a good beauty blogger meant sharing what products one might want to try out and what one should totally AVOID, like fake products. I avoid fake products (especially skincare/makeup, duh!) like a plague because they're everywhere now but these days, imitators are getting better and your post was very helpful (I recently helped a friend point out/avoid some MAC products at a recent bazaar because they were obviously fake). If everybody read your post, no one would be buying from these fake MAC product sellers and they'd hopefully lose will to keep selling.

Fave TBJ post: How to spot fake MACs. I was trying to buy MAC from online sellers a few months ago because I wanted my whole line to be MAC. Needless to say, the very thorough post has scared me off from online buying because there's just no way to inspect the product and there are too many sellers hawking fake stuff!

One of the entries that I really found most helpful was your 'How To Take Smashing Product Mugshots' post. I even bookmarked it so I can go back to it every time I need further tips. I know it's not exactly beauty related but it's really very helpful especially to those bloggers who doesn't have access to lightboxes, or have the time to build one. I also love your Fan Mail Fridays. I know I'm not exactly following directions here, but they basically teach me everything I needed to know, may it be regarding makeup, or skincare/hair care regimen.

It's hard to recall since all of your post is my favorite. I always waited for your new post each day and what I like most are your reviews, your experiences and personal thought on different products you are using. But if I have to choose only one, I would choose Affordable Counterparts Of My Pricey Everyday Makeup Essentials. It gives me an idea on what to purchase that is cheaper but with almost the same effect.

I actually have two favorites when it comes to Beauty Junkee's blog, one is her Fashion section.. i adore her fashion style, and she really is a role model when it comes to appropriate dressing. She makes us believe that each of us should be comfortable & confident of what we are wearing. :) I really love the combination of colors in her post MINT CONDITION!! (Maybe because i love Mint + the color of her lippy ♥ ) Next favorite would be the beauty and fashion tips because for a avid reader and a consumer of beauty products it gives me an idea what to buy and what not to buy and at the same time how to use to products properly. My favorite post by The Beauty Junkee is 'THE BEAUTY JUNKEE: On Hard Work and Delaying Gratification'. I love that it teaches how to control our wants and wait for the right moment to get them. I always look forward to your Fan Mail Friday posts and your tutorial posts. You always write them in such clear and easy to understand detail with the perfect visual aids to accompany it! One of my favorites from you is your "HOW TO: Achieve That Beach Hair Look+Youtube Tutorial" (http://thebeautyjunkee.blogspot.com/2013/01/how-to-achieve-that-beach-hair-look.html). I used to love keeping my hair straight because honestly, I wanted it maintenance free especially since I'm not great with doing my hair at all! I don't even attempt fancy hairstyles because it doesn't turn out as nicely as I want it to in the end. But since I've been more keen on curling my hair and experimenting with it, hence I'm growing it out too nowadays, then the Beach Hair look post was kind of a life saver for me because natural looking and less hassle-free curls was something I was looking for to sport for everyday wear. Your YouTube video tutorial on it helped a lot! I like how you didn't rush through it or leave out steps like certain people do on their videos. Answer to the question "What's your most favorite post by The Beauty Junkee?": first of all i want to greet you Happy 4th anniversary to your blog Ms. Martha! honestly it's too hard to choose just one favorite post but if i have to choose one it should be your "common eyeliner application errors (02/06/12)" this particular post is very useful to me because i really love how lining the eyes can make a huge difference without looking too made up. unfortunately my hands is too shaky and won't cooperate with me :p yes to to make the long story short i found out that i've been doing it incorrectly but ever since i read your eyeliner tips i was able to line my eyes decently. my eye lining application may be far from perfect but i am proud to say that it looks good now as compared before. i have pictures as a proof but then again i don't think i have the courage to show it :p (it is too embarrassing)
i am really thankful that i chance upon your blog 1 and half year ago Ms. Martha :) i have learned so many things and make up and skincare tips since then. more power to you and God bless!

I have wavy hair. It's frizzy, buhaghag, so I have a yearly visit (or thrice every 2 years) to the salon to have Rebond Treatment. A week to a month after the treatment, my hair always looked good: straight, shiny, NO FRIZZ. But after that, "parang bumabalik na naman ang sumpa!". LOL. I can so relate to Odet. DAMAGED. When I first read that post, I was kinda guilty. I AM ALWAYS GUILTY, stubborn. I AM one of the reasons why I have damaged hair. #s 3-4? CHECK!
This is my favorite post because it has really helped on how to deal with and repair my always-damaged hair.
So I followed your tip/s. Being on a tight budget, I always go for the CHEAPER ALTERNATIVES. Haha.
I've been using Dove (blue), and the Advanced Techniques Lotus Shield leave-on (thanks, Avon. haha) since.
I recently had a rebond treatment. And because of my trying-to-save-so-I-bought-a-coupon-deal thing, the tips of my hair, or the part of my hair that was "previously rebonded" was ehem, DAMAGED (I will never go back to that salon again!).
But thanks to your post, it is a constant reminder of what to use, and what to do for my always-damaged hair.
Thank you, Ms. Martha! I read your blog whenever I have the time. I'm a silent reader. But it doesn't take a comment on every post to prove that they are helpful. I know for a fact that they do. You've helped hundreds, or even thousands of readers, and, of course, that includes ME. :)

I've been a silent reader for maybe a year or so and my favorite post and the post that led me to discover your blog is " Review: My Kind Of Fuchsia- Maybelline Color Sensational Lasting Lipstick In Fifth Ave. Fuchsia". This shows that I don't have to spend a lot to get quality make up. This lipstick is really affordable, it has staying power and it looks great on me. It's really a great deal! Aside from that, this post inspired me to be daring and adventurous with my lippies. Thanks to Martha's picture I knew that it will look good on me even before i tried it on. I'm more confident trying out different lipstick colors and I've learned to pick which shade would best suit my morena skin tone. And because of that, my meager belonging of 2 lipsticks became a happy collection of 18 :D

I love your make-up reviews since it was just recently that I got interested in make-up. I'm specifically interested on lipsticks, skin care & hair care products. What's your most favorite post by The Beauty Junkee? Your post on FairyDrops Candy Bar BB Cream (http://thebeautyjunkee.blogspot.com/2012/12/review-fairy-drops-candy-bar-bb-cream.html). It's one of the first few posts I've read about the product. I usually do a sort of blog rounds before buying any beauty product. Your post convinced me that Fairydrops is a good buy because of the swatches and photos. Also, I did remember not to pull out the sponge from the cover because of your post! I absolutely hate fakes! That's why I commend Miss Martha for educating her readers how to differentiate a fake MAC from the real thing. Being scammed in buying fake cosmetics is one of the worst feeling in the world. So its better that one is prepared to know which is authentic and fake to avoid future disappointments. :)

My favorite post by The Beauty Junkee would have to be the "ON HARD WORK AND DELAYING GRATIFICATION". That post really struck me as I can totally relate to it. I'm was once the kind person who would drain my money on impulse buying. I used to believe that I deserve a reward for a month's worth of work. But after reading your post, I reconsidered. I told myself, "why would I settle for little, monthly rewards when I can always have a big and more valuable one after a year of hard work?". Since then, I became more disciplined in handling my finances and have set up goals that will later be the foundation of the rewards I want, not only for myself, but for the people around me as well. Thank you so much for that post! It was truly life-changing! =)

I think as of the moment my fave post of TBJ would be the one that really got into me and is close to my heart and needs. It's the post about the Review Gluta-C Intense Whitening Underarm and Bikini Skin Whitening Gel. A lot of my friends know that I would really love to have my underarm laser-ed. I just want to have those mala-artista underarm where you don’t have to worry to wax every now and then. But then of course, at the moment I don't have the luxury to spend money for a 5-6 sessions, (amounting to P2500 per session). That post has really been helpful and really pushed me into buying it and so far it’s really working well alongside with my Nanny Rose wax. I don’t really have a dark underarm but Gluta-C made it even fairer and softer and made me wax lesser than before which is what I’m really aiming for.

My favorite would have to be the one where you tackle the difference between lightening & whitening lotions. Really right now, the market is bursting with an array of products that I usually get confused what to get & if it would fit the skin problem im addressing. My favorite post of Miss Martha is her post on her Daily and Weekly Facial Routine. Why? Because unlike TV commercials and Product Ads, The Beauty Junkee shows her readers reality, that beauty can not be obtained without effort. Seeing her beauty routine, with all the products carefully handpicked by her and knowing that she may have used so many products just to settle with the few that truly works. My favorite post is The Truth About Slimming Pills. I've never used one myself, but the post was truly eye-opening. Diet pills always seemed harmless to me (I thought they would make your bowel movement more frequent, that's all), but your post enlightened me to the havoc they can wreak on your body.
By the way, I found out about your blog through your anniversary giveaway in 2012. I didn't join then because I couldn't honestly answer "what's your favorite post?" I can't believe it's already been a year since I found you!

My most favorite post by The Beauty Junkee? There are actually two particular ones, but the first is On Hardwork And Delaying Sense Gratification, a post featuring the marshmallow experiment which I can very much relate to. It serves as a reminder to me, and which I really think should be read by everyone so they will be inspired too.
Number two favorite will be the Randomness post, where it showed that you being hit by the writer's block but you were able to overcome it by having the right mindset. I usually like your OOTD's and FOTD's posts! We almost have the same skin shade kasi that's why I always wanted to copy your makeup hehehe. And of course the reviews, it's unbiased kasi so we tend to buy the same product once you recommend it. Specially everytime you include after pictures of using the products.
But my most favorite post is:
1.) Affordable Counterparts of My Pricey Everyday Makeup Essentials / SPEND VS. SAVE
Why? Because honestly, di ko po afford ang mga expensive makeup dahil hindi reach ng budget. Though super curious ako if how the expensive makeup works, I'm glad that there's a counterpart for expensive ones. Like the Chanel Inmitable Waterproof Mascara VS the Maybelline Great Lash, who can tell na kaya palang tapatan ng Maybelline ang Chanel? And instead K-palette eyeliner, why not go for a much cheaper na Maybelline Hypersharp? Hehe ang galing lang! Through these posts, it goes to show that you really consider your readers. Na hindi lahat e afford ang expensive makeup. We can always find DUPES for it at dahil yan sa HELP mo Ms.M! I am a thrifty person that's why I always benefit to these kind of posts of yours. So parang natry ko na din ang expensive makeup. So yeah, thank you Ms.M!

I actually love all Fan Mail Fridays edition on your blog. But one of my favorite posts is this. I am the kind of girl that is on the safe side. I just use toned down makeup, if possible yung hindi talaga halata. Pero diba, what's the use kung hindi naman makikita. But the orange lipstick is becoming a hit. This post is so helpful because I was able to use an orange lippie regardless my skin shade/skin tone. Plus, I was able to share the idea to my sister. Ngayon, makeup na nagiging bonding namin. Since office girl na xa, siya ang pinapasubok ko ng mga gusto ko gamiting make up. :)

Well, all your blog post were truly a worth reading. Your ideas, experiences that are worth SPREADING. Like your post about the super trending and effective "daw" na CHINESE SLIMMING PILLS . Last August, I was searching for an information about slimming pills of course due to my "dream" na pumayat. Coz Im being teased at school. My friends told me I'm getting fatter na daw. And what's worst? when some people are asking me or my close friends if I'am PREGNANT daw. And that time, I'm dealing with a low self-esteem. My auntie was using a chinese slimming pills too (I forgot the brand) last year. I think last January and It promised to give a sexy body, flat stomach and etc. And I was so amazed on how fast my auntie lose her weight! However, my auntie was experiencing different side effects. She experienced palpitations, stomach pain and breathing problems which alarmed us! I was supposed to try the slimming pills that my auntie was using and I'm so glad I haven't! If I was taking chinese slimming pills for a couple of month, I'm pretty sure I will suffer from a very IRREVERSIBLE disease! And yes you are right. Even the genuine/original slimming pills are NOT safe. Proven and tested. :) I know that there are a lot of girls struggling form their body image. But to put your life at risk is not the solution. And One thing I realized in this post of yours. I must be happy and contented even what body sizes I have. I must live with a positive and healthy body image perception. :)

It was only this year when I finally opened up to the wonderful world of social media other than my Facebook account which only serves as my online shop that time . I just hate it that everytime I go to bed I always talk to God and tell him that I failed to control and again let myself enjoy food throughout the day. I try to keep reminding myself that I am not getting older and I really have to start watching what I eat. Yesterday, I was able to check my weight since my mom bought a new weighing scale. It sucks because I am back to my old fat self. I tried taking slimming coffee 3 years ago and eventhough I lost weight fast, I was punished with its side effects. It was a traumatic experience for me. I learned my lesson from then on but I am now hoping that I will be able to lose weight not just because to boost my confidence or have a body to show off but for health reasons. With that inspiring post, I pray to God that I will be able to do it before its too late and have the A Life that I have been wanting for so long.

My favorite post is the one about how to spot fake mac lipsticks. I remember back at the NBC tent bazaar wherein I bought a fake MAC one and was really disappointed that I was fooled. I remember you commented in my blog that you saw the same seller too and that you were suspicious about their stuff when you swatched them and that the lippies don't have the vanilla scent. Anyway, with your post, I got more educated on how to tell the difference and hopefully it won't happen to me again. :P

I will forever be thankful to you for writing this post. Muntik na akong maloko online if not with the help of your article. I opted buying online and the seller stated that the Longchamps that she offers are Authentic. After asking for more pictures and comparing it with yours, some features are odd. Then I asked her to check your website. After that, I haven’t heard anything from her anymore. Either napahiya siguro sya or natakot since she kept on claiming that her bags are authentic. It was never my intention to make her feel that way but at least, siguro next time, she will be more honest to her customers.

Answer to the question "What's your most favorite post by The Beauty Junkee?": Maybe my favorite post was one of the posts I've read when I started following your blog. It's the BROWS 101. Ever since I've read that, I've been quite conscious with my brows unlike before in which I usually just brush the hair and I'm out the door. Now, even if I don't wear a lot of make up, I make sure that my brows are done. It makes me look made up even if I just have my brows and lips done. I really love it and I've been sharing how to groom brows with my friends according to that post. And from that, all of us have been addicted to grooming brows. Thank you so much for that post.

I'm very thrifty in general but sometimes I need new techniques/theories on how I can make saving less painful. I work in a high stress environment so there are times that I deliberately disregard my saving strategies so I could feel less stressed. This post just reminded me that it is worth while to withhold shopping tendencies for more valuable and worthwhile things. I also used this post to guide my officemate when it comes to her spending. Honestly, lahat naman talaga ng posts mo dito sa iyong blog ay very informative, nakakatulong sa iyong mga readers dahil nakikita kong sinisikap mo na kahit konti nmeron kang maipaabot sa iyong mga mambabasa. Nakaka-admire ang mga bloggers na tulad mo dahil kayo ay gumagawa talaga ng paraan at binibigay ang inyong oras para makatulong sa iba. At dahil ang iyong blog ay dinesenyo para makatulong, yung post talaga na gusto ko dahil talagang nakatulong siya sa'kin ay yung tips mo to online shopping. Actually, madalas akong bumibili via online kasi napaka-convenient niya at dahil na rin sa ako'y nakatira sa isang probinsya. Mahirap po kasi dito na maka-hanap ng mga produktong gusto mo kasi usually nasa big cities lang sila mabibili. Kaya sinubukan ko ang online shopping. Yup, totoo talagang nakakatakot rin ang pagbili through online shops kasi hindi ko alam kong totoo ba sila o hindi at hindi rin ako marunomng kumilatis ng mga prodcuts. I'm just a stupid shopper who tries to shop online and doesn't even know the pasikot-sikot in shopping. Hhi. Actually, yung sinabi mong mga dapat gawin, I don't usually do them. For instance, when you said there's a FAQ part on a page of a eller where I can find everything about the them, I usually don't mind that. I can honestly say that I am such an impulse buyer. I really don't mind about the seller. It's the product that I am interested. Kahit usual akong bumibili through online (e.g. facebook), hindi ako mabusisi masyado kasi hindi pa naman ako naloloko. Haha. But seriously though, this is very alarming for me because I can surely be one of those cyber fraud victims and that I cannot let happen especially now that I already know most of the pasikot-sikot sa online shopping.. although not really good at it but still I'm becoming more careful now. Thanks to your tips by the way kasi if not for your post, I could have been an online shopping victim (dahil antanga ko). Hehe.

My favorite post is How to do big brows. It's definitely the "in" nowadays. You can't go wrong when it comes to brows. It can make or break your make up. Neat and perfectly shaped brows with just a lipstick is enough to look good without putting too much effort.

favorite post: I spoke too soon when I said my favorite was Shiseido one for the books. I ve been an avid reader since 2010 but only last year when I got to commenting. I spent days backreading and it was a whirlwind of emotions. Kahit mostly about makeup ang posts mo, there were emotions and feelings involved. when I finally got to the end and read your first entry, I felt emotional. Prang Harry potter book series lang na naiyak ako nong natapos na. Pero sa blog mo, it was a hapy emotion. Congrats Martha, really really you have achieved so much. To answer your question, I narrowed down my selection to 2 entries 1) What's in your everyday makeup kit (First entry) 2) Writing about your passion.
WRITING ABOUT YOUR PASSION won. I used to think na you've always had it easy. Na companies come knocking at your door to give you items. Heheh hindi pala. You've built your BRAND from the ground up. I'l be honest here, Istarted blogging because I wanted to score an invite from one of my fave brands. Kaya lang after rereading this entry, it made me realize na I really have to love what I'm doing in order to ENJOY it and reap rewards from it. I used to obssess kung baket wala akong milyon milyong followers. Baket wala akong invites. HAHAH I was such a deluded "blogger". It was also inspiring how you seemed to take it in stride when you held a blog contest and no one joined. Imagne, THE MARTHA BARBARA dinedma sa contest?! For now, I take things into perspective. I love makeup and sharing my know how to my coworkers and friends. I'll take things one step at a time and enjoy what I'm doing. This way, I won't obssess so much if I don't get invites or freebies . I'll also say that withthe kind of lifestyle that I have right now blogging sometimes take a backseat.
The quote at the end of the post could not have summed it up better: "Nothing great was ever achieved without enthusiasm".
