THE VERDICT:

They said "Fake it 'til you make it"-and so I have relied on concealers for so long to give people the illusion that always I'm well- rested, and to keep my bags from getting a stare from my clients whenever I'm in a meeting. If there's one thing that I can't live without at the moment, that would be a concealer!

So my good ol' friend, the concealer, is starting to evolve: From being the regular, trusty cover- all product, it's being infused lately with skin care components. One of which is the hydrating concealer: I've tried a few and I'd say that some (if not all of them) of these concealers still have to find the right balance between coverage and hydration as they tend to sacrifice either one of the two major benefits.

After my first few trials with Benefit's Fake Up, I was overjoyed for I've realized that finally, hydrating concealers are starting to improve! Hurrah! :D

BENEFIT FAKE UP CONCEALER IN MEDIUM (2) IN DETAIL

Benefit Fake Up is an innovative makeup+skin care product. It boasts of the ultra Hydrating Ring with Apple Seed and Vitamin E extracts for 6 hours of hydration, while the concealer is said to be crease- proof, cake- proof, and smudge- proof. It also promises to conceal dark circles and reduce the appearance of fine lines without the heavy, pasty look of regular concealers.

Concealers tend to look too serious, but not Fake Up! It's in a metallic silver tube decorated with playful brocade- like prints. Overall, the tube looks quite luxe. It can actually pass off as a lipstick!

If you're familiar with The Body Shop's All In One Concealer, Fake Up has the exact same concept, but it's an inverted version of the former: Fake Up is surrounded by a clear, emollient, solidified eye cream. Not gonna lie-I was a bit half- hearted about this concept at first as I thought "How the hell will this product conceal my circles?", but I judged it ever so easily. When I swatched it, I got very good coverage in just two swipes-the concealer at the core seems very concentrated! Coverage is light to medium, and product is fragrance- free.

Medium is a light beige shade with yellow undertones. There are two more colors: Fair (a pale beige shade) Dark (a golden beige shade with peach undertone). Medium is the most universal shade between the three, and methinks it's the only shade in the line that will suit a majority of Filipinas, from fair to morena complexion. However, the color selection, to me, can still be improved and I hope Benefit develops that in the upcoming months.

Top: Concealer+Hydrating Ring
Bottom: Hydrating Ring (almost invisible)

The concealer has a semi- thick consistency, while the Hydrating Ring has a non- greasy oil type of texture. When combined, you get a smooth, buttery, gentle concealer that transfers easily and blends well and quickly-no need for warming up and no tugging and pulling on your under eye skin so that means lesser risk of getting premature wrinkles, all thanks to the Hydrating Ring which gives it that much- needed slip.

BENEFIT FAKE UP CONCEALER IN MEDIUM (2) IN ACTION

Bare eye

Two layers of Fake Up

True to its claim, it does cover naturally. It instantly soothes the under eye areas and gets rid of any flaking. The sheen that this product imparts sorta' reflects light, thus minimizing the appearance of lines, although it can't conceal deeper lines completely. Also, it's best used with another liquid face base for those who are suffering from grave dark circles.

What I like most about Fake- Up is it can be layered on top of foundation sans the coagulated, streaky, Hey-I-just-had-a-concealer-overdose look. I won't really advise it to be used on the lid area, especially to those with oily lids-it's not also advisable for facial concealing due to its slippery texture. Fake Up is best applied using fingers.

I allow around a minute before I set the concealer with powder-that's enough time for it to settle. You can either let the product sit for a minute or two before sealing with powder, or set it with powder right away and nope, the staying power and texture of the concealer will stay unharmed. 'Tis photo- friendly too!

This baby stays put without creasing and makes my eyes feel so smooth until day's end. But since I mentioned that this product has a melting texture, it can get used up faster than ordinary concealers.

It's a wonderful everyday concealer because it feels very light, moisturizing, looks just like skin, and it's so easy to use making it a great companion for those who are always in a rush. I hope Benefit adds SPF to it so it will finally become the ultimate skin care concealer. Nevertheless, I'm willing to buy it again! :)

  6. I'm actually already fine with my current foundation/concealer routine in terms of coverage but the prob is it can feel to thick on the face kasi. I so want to give this one a try although the cheap ass attitude of mine would probably say no we can all agree that most often than not, you really do get what you pay for. So if I want a really good product, I guess I'd have to shell out a few bucks, eh? Hehe.

Thanks for the review Martha. Would definitely give this product some serious thouught! :)

  7. I've been waiting for this review. :-) I was thinking of buying it but I want a concealer that's good for facial concealing also. Hmm. But I think, I would still consider to get myself one. Ang ganda ng coverage sa undereye area mo eh. Hehe.

  8. I was about to comment or ask if you tried using a brush to mix the hydration part and the concealer better but you already mentioned it's best to use fingers haha.

But I guess this is not best for someone on the go or in a hurry and just want a quick concealment since you did mention to wait a minute or two before applying the powder. I will have to try this out at the department store. I'm curious about the hydration mix.

  10. Jakie: Hi there! Good query. Depends. If you have darker circles and bigger bags, you'd need a concealer before foundation. If you don't have a lot of under eye problems, foundation will do the trick. :)

Ohms: That's okay. Hope you can try this soon! :)

Flynster: I did mention that you can either let it settle or set it right away and that makes it a good everyday, on-the-go concealer :)

Rizza: Thank you! if you have dry undereyes, you'll love this! :D

Gellie: That's true. I really believe that you do get what you pay for. :)

Kris: That's okay. Fake Up is a permanent product and by the time you're ready to purchase, it will still be there! :D

    Majorie: Yesiree! :)

Eloise: I tried ArtDeco on my undereyes and it caked. :p It's just best for facial concealing. I can actually make it work, but it takes a whole lotta effort. :)

    Rhain: Thanks! :)
