Estēe Lauder Technique: Long- Wearing Lipstick

Jeez, the last time I did this kind of tutorial was about a year ago, perhaps? Gotta remember all the techniques I learned from attending exclusive makeup workshops and share 'em here!

Here's one from Estēe Lauder.

In 2012, I attended Blair Patterson's, makeup artist for Estēe Lauder, exclusive workshop in the Philippines and this is one technique that stuck with me: Wear lip gloss to make lipstick last longer. I was like. SRSLY??? But isn't gloss's slippery, wet texture incompatible with lipstick?! He showed us how to do it and I tried it myself. Since then, I've been doing this technique when I have a lipstick that doesn't seem to stick or if my lip's chapped and needs a moisturizing layer before lipstick.

You will need:

Lip gloss
Lipstick

STEP 1: Dot lip gloss on the side of your hand and spread out with a finger. Unfortunately, I can't show a more accurate photo for this step as my other hand is holding the camera. :)

STEP 2: Dab gloss all over your lips. Use your finger, a lip brush, or Q- Tip. Coverage should only be sheer; Think of a very light layer of lip balm on top of your lips.

STEP 3: Proceed to applying your preferred lipstick.

The explanation of Blair behind this technique is Lip Gloss has polymers and silicone that help keep the formula of lipstick together and boost the power of wax, the agent that keeps pigments intact. Given lip gloss's ingredients, we can say that it's primer for the lips!

I've owned this technique by doing this: I match the color of my gloss and lipstick for a fuller, bolder pout. ;)

That's all for today. How do you make your lipstick last?

  3. Huh! Very interesting technique. Who would have thought lip gloss can actually prolong the wear of your lipstick? I sure didn't! What I do is I use lip liner underneath my lipstick or I blot then layer then blot then layer again. I don't own any lip gloss but I'll borrow my sister's and put this to the test! Thanks for this post. :)

  4. I'm doing the same!! But I didn't know that it helps in making the lipstick stay longer. I just do it because my lips are very dry. I used to buy Revlon's Color Stay lipstick but the staying power is "uneven" so after eating, it results in blotched and patchy lipstick on the lips :( Thanks for sharing this!! ~ Starr

  6. Wow! I didn't know that this is possible. I was really amaze. Hehe. I'm not fan of lipgloss thats why my lipgloss just left unuse in my stash but now upon reading your post I know what to do:) This is one of the advantage of reading, you will learn something new everyday. The only trick I know to keep my lipstick last is to blot the first application then apply again:) Can't wait to try this trick soon! Thank you:)

  7. I use the help of a lipliner and a lip gloss to help my lipstick last. First, I cover my entire lips with a liner that matches the color of my lippie. Then, I apply a very think amount of lip gloss over it. Finally, I apply my lipstick, spreading it evenly, using a lipstick brush. Works great every time! :D

  9. Just use tints and get over it XD As a college student, I need something easy and will last long. Sadly, I gave my one and only tube of lip gloss to my mom XD If my lip tint is not cooperating... I don't use it XD I have one which slide and doesn't set and I don't think I've ever used it again but I will try when I get my hands on a new tube of lipgloss. I guess I'll get a transparent one so it can go with many lipstick colors :)

  10. Wow. Didn't think that gloss prior to lipstick application would do the trick. As for me, I pat powder after I apply my lipstick or I press it on a tissue then re-apply. Most of the time I wear mattes so those two helps a lot. It's very seldom that I wear lipgloss since I find it irritating when hair sticks to my puckers. :) Thanks for the tip!

  11. I don't like the sticky and heavy feel of lipgloss but if it will make my lipstick cling to my lips longer then it's definitely worth trying.

  12. huh.. haven't thought of that before. I don't have any tricks to make my lipstick stay longer, just re-apply throughout the day (Hassle, I know!).
But this one I must try when I prepare for work later! :)

    1. In my experience, only with tacky lip gloss. I also get scientific about it and check if the lip gloss I'm using has silicone or polymer in it.

  15. Unconsciously, I have been doing this for so long now. But with my dry and chapped lips, I use lip balm, instead of lip gloss, from Maybelline (tinted lip balm during the day + the minty one at night). Even if it's tinted lip balm, I still apply lipstick on top of it. I think the lipstick pigments overlap the tinted lip balm. It's like moisturizing your face first before applying makeup.

  16. Galing! I'll try that very soon. I have lots of lipgloss at home that I gave away some to my sisters who doesn't like using lipsticks. :) Ako I've tried the lipstick+powder+lipstick technique once and it worked. But, it felt kinda weird so I didn't try it again. I just do the lipliner+lipstick technique.
