How do you clean your makeup brushes? I clean mine diligently, but what gets me most of the time is the residue that gets left behind; I hate double cleansing as it takes up so much time so do you have any tip on how I can clean my brushes much more effectively in one go? Thanks a lot!

Thanks for the question! Makeup residue used to be my problem too and don't you agree when I say that this problem is more prominent with synthetic bristles? Hate that!
Over the years, I've developed my own set of brush cleansing techniques and I'm sharing them with everyone today.
1. HUMAN SHAMPOO- REAL BRISTLES; DISHWASHING LIQUID- SYNTHETIC BRISTLES
- I use human shampoo on real bristles to keep them soft and from feeling rough. Animal hair is real hair and needs a cleanser with a bit of softening agent to keep it at its best condition. For synthetic bristles, I use Dishwashing Liquid to break down stubborn makeup effectively; DL is formulated to effectively remove grease from food wares and I find that the same formula applies to oil in foundation formulas, thus making them come off much more easily with little to no residue.
2. MICELLAR WATER FOR STUBBORN MAKEUP RESIDUE!
- When dishwashing liquid is not enough to remove makeup residue, I swirl the brush in a bowl with Micellar Water and rinse with little soap and water afterwards; gets the cleaning job done!
3. BRUSH EGG FOR BETTER CLEANING
- I discovered Brush Egg through online beauty forums so I purchased one in Divisoria; it totally changed the way I clean my brushes; with Brush Egg, my brush gets really clean; I normally swirl the brushes on my palm for a more thorough clean, but it's way too smooth to loosen makeup that have clumped on the bristles and Brush Egg removes those effortlessly. Brush Egg is LYF and you need this for your brushes!

I've discovered using Acne Clear foam wash from Ponds to be the most effective cleaning agent for my brushes. It cleans my most stubborn gunks from liquid foundation to cream concealers in one go. Best of all it has antimicrobial agents for disinfecting my brushes, if it's good for the face it's good for my brushes too.

I use shampoo and dishwashing liquid too. 😊 I think I'll buy a brush egg next time for better cleaning. Btw, I saw a video online about cleaning Beauty blenders/sponges na pwede siya imicrowave mix with a little bit of dishwashing liquid. Plus parang nasterilize na din yung blenders. Have you tried this method for cleaning beauty blenders na Ms.M? Thanks again for sharing! ❤

The lid of Nissin cup noodles is my cheap quick alternative to brush egg (which I happen a lot because I frequently misplace my egg brush #scatterbrain)
ReplyDeleteThis blog entry is very timely, since I've been doing a lot of research on how to clean makeup brushes and sponges. I remember using a beauty blender that I did not wash with water first before using it so it caused me 748271919472919 pimples on my face :( That's when I realized it is important to clean whatever we're using on our face, esp brushes. I will definitely try #2 and #3 (I just bought a Brush Egg 😁).
ReplyDeleteI'm planning to clean my brushed by cleaning it on the brush egg using the soap I'm using on my face (Dove Beauty Bar for Sensitive Skin) then clean it afterwards with Micellar. Will that be okay, Ate Martha? ☺️

When I start cleaning my brushes ang goal ko lang non is mapalinis talaga didn't know na may mga techniques or what so ever you call this. haha because I've tried to clean my brushes and sponge using bareta, sabong panlaba kasi yun yung una kong nakita hahahaha at ang lakas lang ng amoy nung natuyo na siya kaya simula non di ko na ginamit yung sponge ko. noob talaga :( So yes, I've learned my lesson now. ReplyDeleteDishwashing liquid and shampoo LNG pala! Haha! I have been buying brush shampoo but hindi talaga nag work. May residue pa rin. This is just very helpful, Ms. Martha!
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing Ms. M! I didn't know that it's much better for Real bristles to use shampoo I thought it's okay to use either snampoo or dishwashing liquid now I know. Sometimes I also use organic soaps in sample sizes when cleaning my brushes. and at times when I don't have time to wash them I spray a Cosmetic Sanitizer before use.
