FAN MAIL FRIDAYS: All about Acidic Skin

WHAT.A.HOT.FRIDAY. Guys, please stay hydrated, slather on sunscreen, and make sure to take breaks in between if you're walking to and fro work. High risk of sun burn, sun damage, and heat stroke today so protect yourself at all times.

Today's FMF is from Ana and she asks:

Hi Martha,
How do you know if your skin is acidic?
Ana

Hi Ana!

First, we have to know that our skin has a natural acid mantle; it's what protects our skin from bacterial growth and mixed together with water, you have your skin pH. A healthy pH is between 4-6; anything below is too acidic and anything above is too alkaline.

You might have a balanced skin pH, but here are things that may cause it to become too acidic:

1. Harsh cleansers, exfoliants, and peels
2. Diet

How do you know if your skin is acidic?

1. Makeup turns a shade darker
2. Skin feels drier than usual
3. Skin is red, irritated, and flaking

SOLUTIONS FOR ACIDIC SKIN

1. For skin care, if skin is compromised and you think you are too acidic, stick with hydrating skin care until your skin reverts to its normal pH. Steer clear of harsh cleansers and exfoliants and limit use to once or twice a week.
2. For makeup, makeup tends to darken on acidic skin so go a shade lighter.
3. Change your diet. Load up on vegetables because it is rich in water, minimize fried food that induce gastric juices, and drink your recommended water intake (7-8 glasses a day)

That's all and have a good day, guys!

  5. My skin is currently acting up. Foundation does oxidize and my skin feels drier than usual. Probably because my diet has changed over the summer. :( Thanks for this, Ms. Martha!
