THE VERDICT:

Consumer behavior is now geared towards a more earth- friendly lifestyle and more and more people are going for sustainable alternatives for common commodities; that is one side of the fence, but how about the other side? How do brands take part in this and complete the cycle?

I once talked with an environmental activist and I asked her if a completely sustainable, environment- friendly lifestyle can be achieved in this day and age of consumerism. She said that making conscious buying choices and lessening the amount of products we buy is a way, but not the total solution; we can always choose to cut back on consumerism and choose friendlier alternatives, and start- up businesses can always begin with sustainability as a core value, but mega brands will always play a significant role in shaping buying behavior either through marketing or product innovation. Mega brands are always about making lives easier and efficient at a low cost, which is unfortunately detrimental to nature, but when these brands start re-evaluating their values and include sustainability in the mix, then a completely earth- friendly lifestyle may just be a couple of steps away; it may not be 100%, but at least society will get pretty close.

Unilever is one of the mega brands that has started to join the sustainable revolution through an attempt at a mass eco- friendly body care line called Love, Beauty, and Planet.

Love, Beauty, and Planet has just launched in the Philippines and is comprised of shampoo, conditioner, body wash, and body lotion, and features three collections: Murumuru Butter and Rose, Lavender and Argan Oil, and Tea Tree Oil and Vertiver.

What makes Love, Beauty, and Planet eco- friendly?

- Ingredients are about 90% natural in origin
- Paraben, silicone, and dye- free, and made of vegan ingredients
- Cruelty- free
- Made of natural, sustainably- sourced ingredients
- Formulated to be quick rinse to save gallons of water in a year that can be used for drinking
- Bottle is made from 100% recycled material (from disposed Love, Beauty, and Planet body care products as well)
- Key value of the brand is its bottle return and recycling program

Murumuru Butter and Rose is a radiance- inducing, softening range for the skin and hair; Murumuru Butter is sourced from the Amazon while the Rose extract is from Bulgarian Rose found in the Rose Valley of Bulgaria. This range is great for colored hair as well because it has very low SLS concentration and Murumuru Butter will help treat dryness and damage caused by dyes and other salon treatments.

The products aren't exactly cheap, but in the realm of sustainable, nearly 100% natural, earth- friendly beauty products, this is one of the cheapest in my opinion, not to mention one of the most accessible too because it is available in major department stores, supermarkets, and online at Lazada Philippines.

L-R: Body wash, conditioner, shampoo
The body wash is rich and silky, and completely moisturizing; a little goes a long way and it produces a rich, frothy foam with a moisturizing feel and my skin doesn't feel dry after shower!

The shampoo is a huge favorite of mine; it's a pearlized formula that doesn't leave my hair too coarse nor dry. The conditioner is good as well, surprisingly, despite the fact that it doesn't contain a ton of synthetic softeners.

The products smell ridiculously amazing and good! The products leave my hair and skin with a creamy rose fragrance; I seriously can't stop smelling my hair after using these products.

The products give my hair the right amount of softness, bounce, and silkiness; don't expect the kind of shine, softness, and frizz control you will get from cheaper, commercial hair care products that are laden with silicone, dimethicone, and other synthetic tamers and softeners. One great thing about it is the fragrance lasts the whole day!

About the return and recycle program, Love, Beauty, and Planet in the USA is able to recycle their product bottles through an established, streamlined system of consumer engagement and assistance, logistics, and recycling. In the Philippines, Unilever has partnered with Linis Ganda, a local environment organization that recycles plastic waste; you can turnover your bottles there. However, I feel that this is a temporary solution as they lay out a more solid, streamlined process of returning and recycling of their products. The brand is very new in the Philippines; let's give them that, but I hope Unilever is working out the process now because it's a retail product and empty bottles are going to pile up anytime soon. In the meantime, there is a customer care email printed on each bottle; you can reach out to them through this if you want more information on how to turnover empty bottles. Let's keep the brand accountable on this.

Anyway, Murumuru Butter and Rose is my absolute favorite Love, Beauty, and Planet collection! No kidding, these three are my huge favorites now and I'm going to repurchase very soon!
