THE VERDICT:

My early encounters with Make Up For Ever were in theatre school; the veterans of the industry would either use Kryolan or Make Up For Ever; one product that most of them swore by was Make Up For Ever's Mat Velvet Foundation; a lot of guys loved that because it could withstand any stage condition, even their comparatively oilier skin (fyi, Cirque Du Soleil members used Mat Velvet Foundation as one of their bases because it is waterproof); the thing with that product though is it tends to look flat matte.

Now Make Up For Ever has refreshed this good ol' favorite as the new Make Up For Ever Matte Velvet Skin Foundation, a long- wearing foundation that covers all yet looks naturally matte!

Make Up For Ever Matte Velvet Foundation is a full coverage, long- wearing foundation made with Flexifit Technology that allows comfortable, flexible wear that most matte foundations can't give. If I'm not mistaken, the range locally comes in about 10 shades.

Make Up For Ever Matte Velvet Skin Foundation in Y405

Y405 is my shade in the range; it's a medium dark shade with yellow undertone; it looks light on me in this swatch, but since the formula oxidizes for a little, it eventually matches my skin tone. Morenas, take note of the shade and acidic skin, take note of the formula.

Consistency is a semi- rich liquid-cream; coverage is medium to full. It's has a little drag to it because the formula is meant to set into a long- lasting finish, but no serious issue with it.

That's why I got this in the bag too: Make Up For Ever 1085 brush. This foundation has a relatively shorter handle for better control and a wide, dense brush head to spread full coverage liquid foundation formulas easily, evenly, and without absorbing any of the product.

Make Up For Ever's brush bristles are synthetic, but made to feel like natural ones. The brush is soft, flexible, and the slim width allows me to apply foundation on the inner corners of my face easily and seamlessly, leaving no space uncovered.

The thing with Make Up For Ever's new foundation, when I used a Kabuki brush, the coverage was greatly reduced; when I used a regular foundation brush, it was too slim that I ended up with streaky patches as it just 'sliced' its way through the coverage. 1085 brush by Make Up For Ever has spread the foundation evenly and efficiently without minimizing coverage; it's the perfect combo; the wideness of the brush is also great for dabbing foundation on certain areas, in case you want at least 95% of the foundation to go right onto your skin.

But then I was thinking that the brush is only useful for this new foundation; in that case, it would be a too special foundation so I tried it with other products like Kat Von D Lock It and Fenty Beauty Pro Filt'r Foundation, both of which almost have the same consistency as Matte Velvet Skin. Lo and behold, it worked!

I therefore conclude that Make Up For Ever 1085 Foundation Brush is the perfect brush for thick, full coverage foundations, if you don't want to use a makeup sponge!

Let's go back to Matte Velvet Skin Foundation and see how it fared:

One layer of Make Up For Ever Matte Velvet Skin Foundation

I only apply around one to two layers every time and supplement with a concealer and corrector to cover post- acne marks and other discolorations. The foundation sets almost instantly into a matte finish that looks breathable.

My face doesn't feel taut and dry during wear. It has good coverage overall, although can't necessarily conceal bumps completely.

After 8 hours of wear

I did not retouch my face for 8 hours just to road- test  this foundation's long- wearing claim. As you can see, my nose and the areas around it were already pretty oily, but overall, coverage was pretty much still intact.

This foundation is great for those with combination oily/normal, oily, and even oily/dry skin because of its comfortable formula. If you love the coverage of matte foundation, but still want that natural look, you have to go for this; don't forget to get the brush too because they're a perfect combo!
