THE VERDICT:
If there's one thing I love about today's Filipino Gen Z content creators, a lot of them are entrepreneurial. Especially for the top ones, fame is a gift and a lot definitely know how to make the most of it by improving their lives as well as the lives of others through entrepreneurship. I am all for people who aspire to become entrepreneurs because more businesses mean more jobs for people.
Two shining examples are Rei Germar and Mae Layug, two of the top beauty and lifestyle gurus in the Filipino content creator circle. They partnered with Fresh, one of the rising K Beauty- inspired local skin care lines to bring their dream to reality: SUNGLOW.
As big believers of sunscreen, Rei and Mae want to make sunscreen usage easy and instant so they have developed products that will allow us to retouch and wear sunscreen anytime. anywhere!
Sunglow is a skin care and makeup line that features four pilot products: tinted sunscreen, pressed powder, tinted lipscreen, and spf mist. All products have SPF 50 PA++++ and infused with skin- caring ingredients that are popular in most skin care nowadays such as Centella Asiatica and Niacinamide.
The packaging is cute but still sophisticated, and doesn't look cheap at all. I like the fun, girly vibe; it has some undertones of Happy Skin's design.
Creme Tinted Sunscreen ingredients
Creme Tinted Sunscreen (P429) comes in 3 shades: Fair, Medium, and Deep. Medium is a medium warm beige with a yellow undertone. Based on the swatches, all shades have yellow undertones and even the lightest shade isn't ridiculously light, which goes to show that they have researched thoroughly and made sure that these are apt for the most common Filipina skin tones.
Consistency is gel cream; texture feels very moisturizing; light, but can feel a bit heavy if you apply more than two layers because it has Macadamia oil extract right at the top of the ingredients list so if you have oily skin, apply sparingly. It has a light summery floral fragrance.
Surprisingly, for a tinted sunscreen, it is quite pigmented. It can even pass of as foundation to be honest; whenever I am using this product, I don't have to wear concealer or corrector anymore. It's very spreadable and doesn't streak because the oil extract helps create a smoother texture and finish, and makes the product easier to even out.
TBJ TIP: Best applied with a regular foundation brush, but your fingers are just fine too.
Ingredients
I'm into sun sprays and anti-pollution sprays at the moment so this one is right up my alley. Aside from the high and very much appreciated SPF ingredient, it has Niacinamide and Centella Asiatica, both of which are good when it comes to protecting and restoring the skin during and after sun exposure. It has an aquatic floral fragrance.
The mist isn't necessarily water, but more like moisturizing water. This is generous with oil ingredients as well so it helps keep the skin looking fresh, hydrated, and dewy longer. However, if I go trigger happy on the atomizer, my face ends up feeling too moist and it takes a while to dry up and set so my advise, don't be like me, apply sparingly! :D
TBJ TIP: Use it to retouch sunscreen not only on your face, but your arms, legs, and back as well while on the go!
Tinted Lipscreen Ingredients
L-R: Very Berry, Sangria, Sunkissed
Sunglow Tinted Lipscreen (P249) is a range of tinted lip balms with SPF 50 PA+++. First of all, I like that it has a highe of amount of SPF to protect one of the most delicate parts of our face, not to mention most prone to UV damage, the lips.
Lipscreen comes in 3 shades: Very Berry, Sangria, and Sunkissed. Frankly speaking, these are way too pigmented to be categorized as tinted lip balm; they can pass off as glossy lipstick already. I like it anyway because it's great for days when I want to wear lipstick, lip balm, and spf in one go, but if you want something that looks more stain- like on the lips, this is not it.
Consistency is soft cream; nice to know that it has emollient natural oil ingredients rather than petrolatum to soothe and moisturize the lips; in my experience, natural oils moisturize lips better and can even heal dry lips completely.
Here's a quick test of the products:
Bare skin
2 layers of Sunglow Creme Tinted Sunscreen
I like the smoothing effect of this product, plus it has a nice dewy finish that doesn't look and feel sticky. On the swatch above, Medium looked a bit too light on the swatch, but a few minutes after application, the shade adjusts to my skin tone, which brings up the issues of oxidation; the product oxidized on me, but not by a huge lot; I actually liked that it did because the shade adjusted better to my skin tone. One more thing: no white cast yay!
Here's the tinted sunscreen when set with powder.
The product, on its own, doesn't have noteworthy staying power because it's designed to be skin care, not really makeup. My t-zone would oil up for about an hour or two with this product on so I make sure to set it with my trusty oil controlling powders.
SUNKISSED
- Warm coral with terracotta and rose undertone.
SANGRIA
- Warm orange red.
VERY BERRY
- Pinkish red
Since this is a very emollient, glossy product, don't expect it to last after a meal. It also imparts a light cooling sensation because of the peppermint extract. It also has a tendency to bleed around my lips and in my mouth if I apply a lot.
I like the concept of Sunglow as a brand: it encourages people to make sunscreen usage, whether knowingly or unknowingly, a habit by making sunscreen easier to use, not heavy, and by putting it in everyday beauty products that we always use and even in those we never thought could have sunscreen. Sunscreen is very important so I highly encourage you to wear it everyday!
Looking forward to the next products that Rei and Mae will come up with, but for now, my recos from this line are the Sun Mist and Creme Tinted Sunscreen!
Have you tried this brand already? What are your thoughts? What are your favorites?
