THE VERDICT:

When Australian beauty brands are the topic of the conversation, Aesop is always one of the brands that 's always brought up because it's arguably the most recognized Australian beauty brand globally (next would be Grown Alchemist and Becca); one of the reasons behind their popularity is their very aesthetic design and coffee- colored pump bottles that look darn good on baths and sinks. I think Aesop is one of those brands that have set the standard for modern minimalist packaging design.

I would consider Aesop a high- end brand because of its price point. I've purchased an Aesop face product years ago, but it was a bummer because it did not work for me so this time around, I decided to try what they're really known for, which are the hair and skin products. They're also known for their hand wash and hand creams, but I couldn't justify spending thousands for a hand wash; I'm quite happy with the supermarket variants.

I purchased Aesop's best- selling Geranium Leaf Body Cleanser and Rose Hair Scalp Moisturizing Masque last December 2021. Are they worth the hype and price?

So before we go to the review, here are some information about these products from Aesop's website:

GERANIUM LEAF BODY CLEANSER- a clean, refreshing mix of Bergamot and Mandarin rind. Helps clean the skin and reinvigorate the senses.

ROSE HAIR AND SCALP MOISTURIZING HAIR MASQUE- A blend of Rose petal, Beta Carotene, and Lavender Stem that helps hydrate, soothe, and moisturize dry, flaky scalp and helps restore vitality and luster to the hair. The smallest is 120ml (P1700) and the biggest is 500ml (P4,700).

First of all, the products are REALLY EXPENSIVE. I don't remember spending P2,000+ for a body wash in my life, ever, until my mini shopping activity at Aesop last year. Aesop commands a hefty premium for the products because according to their website, they pride themselves on the quality of the ingredients that they use for their products: plant- sourced, laboratory- made, and tested for the highest efficacy and safety. I give them the benefit of the doubt that they are really meticulous with their ingredients and products, but these qualities mentioned, I mean, aren't these present in other, more affordable products as well and isn't safety the bare minimum for all cosmetic products?

Anyway, if there's one aspect of Aesop that gives you the feel that you are using a truly high- end product is the fragrance; Aesop's fragrance blend is really good and you can definitely smell that they used a high concentration of essential oils/fragrant extracts to give their products a beautiful fragrance. If there's one aspect of a cosmetic product that immediately gives itself away and tells you that it's either cheaply made or not, it would be fragrance.

GERANIUM BODY CLEANSER

Smells really good; like you're in an orange orchard illuminated by the warm sun. It's also very concentrated so a little goes a long way. It didn't dry out my skin, but didn't feel moisturizing either. The SAs at Aesop said that this is their best- seller and I think it's because of its fragrance, not really the performance. If you love citrusy, fresh scents and you don't mind splurging on expensive body wash, then you'll like this one.

ROSE HAIR SCALP MOISTURIZING MASQUE

I was taken aback by the price that I paid for this hair masque haha! I didn't look at the price' I just grabbed it and went to the counter to pay. I went for it anyway because it was Christmas, you know.

I've been using this hair masque for 2 months now and what I like about it is it's very concentrated and also smells really good; like Turkish rose laced with Lavender. It's very easy to rinse and I like that my hair feels bouncy and looks really shiny after usage. Personally, I think I can get the same effect from a cheaper product.

To summarize my experience, the products are okay. Good to try if you feel like splurging on bath and hair care products once in a while. Between the body wash and the hair mask, I'll get the mask again because I feel that it's more functional, but I'll get the smaller version. Also, I'm just happy that I finally got these aesthetic bottles that I plan to refill once I use up all these products.

But all is not lost between me and Aesop; I'm keen to try their Parsley Seed skin care collection and hand cream, which others are raving about. I hope I'll have a better experience with these products.

Have you tried Aesop's products already? What are your thoughts?
