THE VERDICT:
I found the perfect excuse to buy this item last year because of maskne troubles. However, I only got to use it around last month because for some reason, my skin became healthier and it felt like it was fighting acne naturally and by itself around the time I got this product so I didn't feel the need to use it; instead, I just used mild, hydrating skin care to keep it healthy and I used spot treatments only when I had to.
But alas, last month, maskne came back and my skin looked and felt really bad! Pimples started popping out and the whiteheads were the most irritating. Finally, a better time and good excuse to use Sunday Riley's famed UFO facial oil.
And you know what? This baby is worth the hype!
Sunday Riley is a brand famed for its luxurious facial oils, with Luna being the most popular oil from the range. UFO is also a popular oil because it's for acne- prone skin. There are two sizes for every Sunday Riley facial oil: 35ml and 15ml. 35ml is expensive at P5,000+ and 15ml is the cheapest, which is great for those who want to try their products first. Sunday Riley is cruelty- free, Sulfate- free, Paraben- free, Gluten- free, Soy- Free, Phthalate- Free, B Corp certified, sustainable, and My Green Lab certified GREEN product.
Ingredients
What's so special about Sunday Riley oils and why are they so expensive? One, they don't skimp on the oils. If other products use carrier oils to fill up the volume, Sunday Riley mainly uses the oils with the active ingredients and most of these are precious oils.
UFO or Ultra Facial Oil is a clarifying facial oil with 1.5% Salicylic Acid to exfoliate skin and combat acne. It has Tea Tree and Black Cumin oils, the main active oils that help declog the skin and fight acne- causing bacteria; it also has Milk Thistle extract to counteract the drying effects of Salicylic Acid, and Licorice and Hexylresorcinol to lighten post- acne marks. All in all, UFO is a versatile oil that any acne- prone person would love to have because it fights acne and lightens the pesky marks it leaves behind.
I only purchased the 15ml size and surprisingly, I find the size decent. This is a highly concentrated oil and a little goes a long way. A 15ml bottle can last you for more than 4 months even if you use it regularly.
UFO has an odd yet interesting green color, which is due to the Tea Tree extracts; this product has a pretty strong, naturally- occurring odor that is reminiscent of mint and pepper; not for the faint of heart though. I'm the most tolerable person when it comes to skin care odor/fragrance and yet I find this one pretty strong; it's something that you should consider should you wish to try this product. I wish Sunday Riley can do something about the fragrance though!
This is a pretty rich oil and three drops are enough to cover my entire face. It leaves a filmy barrier so I only use this product at night; the consistency will be too much for oily skin types and in humid climates.
So this was my skin 4 weeks ago. Looks pretty rough and those whiteheads were the bane of my existence; they were popping out endlessly! :((
So I used the UFO religiously for three weeks, specifically during night time only. I still exfoliated, but only once a week and I used liquid peels or gel exfoliators instead because this oil has 1.5% salicylic acid already and I didn't want to over exfoliate my skin.
The product has no stinging effect and my skin did not feel taut and dry during usage because it had moisturizing ingredients that counteracted the drying effect of salicylic acid. My face did not peel as well.
Now here's my skin right now. Holy moly, it looks sooo much better and the dark mark has lightened! All that putting up with the odor of the product was worth it because my usage paid off! I can go out bare faced again! :D
So I now understand why Sunday Riley is hyped so much in the skin care community; the brand didn't skimp on ingredients that's why it's very effective, at least to me. I'd gladly recommend this to those with acne- prone, oily skin. If you have sensitive skin though, I would suggest that you test it first because it has Black Cumin, a type of spice that can irritate sensitive skin types.
I would like to note though that there are a lot of reviews from people who were dissatisfied by the product and broke out badly during usage. I'm just lucky that this product has worked marvelously for me, but as with all skin care products, it really depends on your skin's reaction to the product/s. Before investing in any of these products, be sure to read reviews thoroughly and find out which Sunday Riley oil is perfect for you.
Have you tried Sunday Riley's oils already? What are your thoughts?
