Filipino Celebrity Makeup Lines: Hot and Not

About 2 or 3 years ago, when international beauty brands started tapping into the power of celebrities through exclusive, limited edition, personally- curated makeup collections, and celebrities themselves started coming up with their very own makeup brands (Hello, Kylie Jenner!), the Philippines followed suit; not long after, Happy Skin began tapping the likes of Kris Aquino, Liz Uy, Heart Evangelista, KC Concepcion, and Kath Bernardo for their exclusive makeup collections. And then Vice Ganda revolutionized the scene and started the very- first celebrity owned commercial makeup brand with Vice Cosmetics followed by BLK Cosmetics by Anne Curtis. BYS, Ever Bilena, and MAC eventually joined the scene with Lustrous, Maine X MAC, and Ever Bilena X Kris Aquino. Surely, there will be more celebrity makeup lines to come and partnerships to be forged; what an exciting time for the local beauty scene!

But at the end of the day, whether celebrity- driven or not, these brands all have their pros and cons, and I'm here to share today what's hot and what's not with the current Filipino celebrity makeup lines out in the local market today.

- When everyone can't afford Kylie Jenner's lip kits, Vice Cosmetics came to save the day. Vice Cosmetics started with focus and launched first with lipsticks; it's the same strategy of Kylie Jenner and I find it brilliant because in business sense, focus is one of the keys to success, plus it's a good way to test the waters in a highly saturated industry.

HOT: The bullet lipsticks! Great packaging, great pigmentation, great quality, plus it's P195.00 only!

NOT: The lip liners. They are very fragile and break very easily. It is unfortunate that they come with Phenomenal Liquid Lipstick, which is a good liquid lipstick, by the way. I visited the website just now and saw that the liquid lipsticks are now being sold individually.

- Shortly after Vice Cosmetics, BLK Cosmetics followed suit. A partnership with Anne Curtis and Happy Skin's Jacque Yuengtian, BLK Cosmetics aims to be the modern, busy Filipina's no- fuss beauty solution.

HOT: Creamy Cheek Paint! This milky, pigmented cheek tint lasts long and works over and under makeup. The creamy matte bullet lipsticks are a must- try too, especially My Love from the K-Beauty Collection.

NOT: Eyeliner. Not waterproof and streaky. Eyebrow pencil. Too waxy. BB+CC Cream Stick. Promising, but I have no shade match.

- One of the biggest beauty collaborations this 2018 is between Ever Bilena and the Queen of All Media, Kris Aquino, who has quickly positioned herself as a Facebook star when she finally ventured into social media. Kris Aquino released a mini collection called Life Kit, which contained her essentials: Lipsticks and Eyebrow Pencils. Just this month, Ever Bilena X Kris Aquino Matte Liquid Lipsticks have launched.

HOT: Matte Liquid Lipsticks! Good color and quality; perhaps Ever Bilena's most pigmented lipstick yet and it's better than their current releases.

NOT: It's not really bad, but the eyebrow products are not life- changing. I'm probably expecting more since I'm an eyebrow product lover, but hey, it's affordable and if you're looking for an eyebrow product that just works, then this will be okay.

- Happy Skin launches Generation Happy Skin, a sub- brand that targets the young segment. Together, they launched the first collection with teen queen Kathryn Bernardo called Kath X Happy Skin. The collection is more affordable and features everyday basics with shade personally chosen by Kath herself.

HOT: Liquid eyebrow liner! This one has good quality: controllable pigmentation, and great staying power.

NOT: Lip and Cheek tint. Nothing spectacular. It's a basic lip and cheek tint; there are more affordable ones with better staying power and delivers the same effect. Mascara. Same thoughts as the tint; it's something that your good ol' Maybelline mascara can deliver at a much affordable price.

- BYS Philippines' biggest project is Lustrous, a sub- brand made in partnership with one of the hottest young stars of the Philippines, Nadine Lustre. Lustrous, to me, is a beach- inspired makeup line, which represents Nadine's love for nature and the beach. As Chief Creative Director of Lustrous, everything from the packaging down to the products and colors, Nadine designs. Lustrous first launched with a full collection featuring eyeshadow palettes, brow products, eyeliners, lip tint, mascara, and brushes. Lately, Lustrous came out with their latest bullet lipstick/liquid lipstick collection.

HOT: Brow Gel. It's long- lasting and the shade suits morena skin tones. Bronzer and Highlight Palette. Great colors and very unique highlighter shades.

NOT: Lip Tint. It's super patchy and will only suit a few skin tones. Brushes. Flimsy handle and sparse bristles, but at least it does not shed and feels very soft. Mascara. Doesn't dry quickly, but if you want a lower lash mascara that works in lengthening those barely there lashes, this will work.

In general, I think these celebrity makeup lines are competitive enough for international drugstore makeup brands. I can't wait for the next release and also, for more celebrity makeup lines/partnerships to come out!
