The power of vision boards + How to make one

Let me tell you a story.

About 10 years ago, I was such a happy-go-lucky person, and a bit of a mess; I was just skating through life and just waiting for whatever life throws at me; I literally had zero savings and would spend everything that I got; I also had goals, but wasn't too bothered to achieve them. I wasn't really thinking about my future.

Thinking about it now, I realized that I was like that because aside from being a huge ball of negative energy, I really had no idea how to achieve my goals, let alone had any idea what particular goals I really wanted to achieve.

My life began to change for the better when I attended a self- help seminar with Vision Board- making as one of the topics; the seminar briefly brushed over it, but I liked the thought so when I got home, I decided to make a vision board; it was actually a vision file folder because I didn't have a board then LOL.

With bond paper, old magazines and newspapers, scissors, tape, and some scrapbook stuff, I created my vision board. I sat down and thought about what I really wanted; I envisioned first the life I wanted to have and the goals that I needed to achieve and I'm comfortable doing to get there little by little; with an inspired heart, I started flipping through the pages, snipping away, and sticking on the papers the things I wanted and creating the big picture of the life that I wanted to have. Afterwards, I prayed over it and kept it...for years. I never looked at it ever again.

After I got married, I accidentally came across my vision board while packing stuff that I would bring to my husband and I's new home, and decided to take a look at it again. I realized, about half of the things I have put in there, I have achieved; dreams of travel, material things, of health, life, relationships, and career. I cried, I'm telling you because I never thought that I'd be able to achieve anything I've put in my vision board; I've come a long way from that directionless, too relaxed girl to being a fierce, goal- oriented, and driven woman; I'm still a long way from my ideal life, but seeing my old vision board and realizing I've achieved a lot of my goals already comforts me and assures me that I am on the right path.

A vision board is a great, inspiring personality development activity that will encourage you more to achieve your dreams; because a vision board gives more clarity to your goals, giving you more reasons to act on them and inspires you to think of actionable steps to achieve them. The power of a vision board is it makes your dreams more visual and tangible, ergo more believable; we get inspired to act when we realize which goals we really want to achieve and picture them much more clearly, and a vision board helps a lot.

It's been a while since I created a vision board and I thought it's time for a new one for bigger goals and bigger dreams, which will hopefully be greater strides towards the life that I really want to achieve.

Neutrogena and BDJ partnered for an event that's all about becoming the best versions of ourselves; Neutrogena talked about how taking care of one's skin is the first step to nurturing confidence that is vital in achieving our dreams while BDJ and Trixie Esguerra, talked about how we could achieve our dreams through vision boards.

Trixie Esguerra is known for her vision board- making workshops; I had the pleasure of experiencing it two weeks ago.

How do you make a vision board?

1. Gather your materials: illustration board, scissors, magazines, news paper, decorating materials, stickers, tape/glue, inspirational cutouts that you can download online and print.2. Think of the important aspects in your life: it could be family, career, health, spirituality, community, personal advocacy, finances, relationships, travel, business, etc.3. Before beginning designing your board, sit down, talk to yourself, and think about the goals that matter; this is important to give more meaning to your vision board and to encourage you more to achieve what you have put in there. Oftentimes, we're not that inspired to achieve our goals because deep down, we're not really sure if they matter. Give yourself enough time to think about goals that you don't only want to achieve, but matter as well.4. After determining the important aspects in your life and the goals that matter, list down three to five goals per aspect; don't overload each area because it makes the task more daunting, ergo not doable. If you have a lot of goals, make your plan more actionable by breaking them down into groups and putting a timeline: for example, you want to achieve the first 5 goals out of 15 in 2 years; this will make your goals more achievable.5. Find representation of those goals in the magazines and newspapers that you have gathered.6. Stick away, design away!

This is my vision board for 2019. I hope to achieve these in the next 5- 10 years; comparing to my first vision board, this one has lesser material things and focuses more on financial security, health, and good money habits. So help me God!

But bear in mind that a vision board is just a great guide to helping you achieve your goals; while life is what you make of it and a result of how much work you put into it, I still believe that there will be divine intervention in your journey so don't be too fixated on your goals because the divine may have planned something better and greater for you; so after creating your vision board, take a good look at it, pray over it, and end by saying:

I OPEN MYSELF UP TO RECEIVING THESE, OR SOMETHING BETTER!

I hope you found this inspiring; I would love to see your vision boards!

  1. Indeed inspiring. Way back my younger years, we dont have vision boards, instead we use the bond paper and either draw or cut-out pictures of what we want to achieve in 10 years.
Reading this blog, I thought I will pass this learnings to my kid. He is not that into crafty stuffs but, I know there is an art in his heart. Very timely that he has undergone "manhood" thing. I will have him do his vision board while waiting for his to heal.
