Review: Carmex Lipbalms

Here’s a review on Carmex’s lip balms. Prices are posted below.

Here's a brief history about the man and lips behind Carmex (taken from mycarmex.com):

Alfred Woelbing was a buyer at a Chicago department store back in 1937, but he didn’t much like working in the big city. So he began his own business, making silver polish in the basement of his home in Wauwatosa, Wisconsin. It paid the bills, for the time being.

Always curious, always inventive, Alfred then decided to create a home remedy for a pesky condition that he’d often suffered: cold sores. After much experimentation over a hot plate, Alfred created Carmex, and then proceeded to sell it to pharmacies by going door to door. If they weren’t interested in purchasing his product, he gave them a dozen jars for free—along with a post card for a re-order. He figured that if he could sell one jar at every drug store in Milwaukee and Chicago, he and his wife could make a decent living.

It wasn’t long before Alfred’s home-based business was booming. Apart from a wartime hiatus in production due to lanolin rationing, Alfred’s company—now known as Carma Labs—grew steadily. For 35 years, Alfred made sales calls in Wisconsin, Illinois and parts of Indiana. He remained president of the company until his death in May, 2001.

THE VERDICT:

Kiehl’s Lipbalm will always have a special place in my heart, but Carmex has swept me off my feet. It’s my current go-to lipbalm since the weather is so erratic, and it’s causing my lips to flake big time. It keeps my puckers moisturized all day even if I don't reapply it!

Carmex is apparently a cult favorite in the U.S. It is the best- kept secret of many models, celebrities, and common people alike. Who could blame them? It's cheap, and more importantly, IT WORKS!

Carmex Philippines was kind enough to send me samples. If not for these, I would never ever know how great this product is! Many thanks again for these!

CARMEX ORIGINAL LIP BALM IN JAR (P99.75)

It’s my most favorite Carmex variant. I simply love it because it's lightweight, and can be worn underneath lipsticks in satin, glossy, or moisturizing formulas. It does not have any color, and dries quickly. It has a harder consistency as compared to Carmex click sticks and liquid balm in tube. This one has no flavor whatsoever.

I find this easy to use because it does not make my lips feel heavy, and coverage is very controllable. It dries off to a semi- matte finish too. If you like wearing lipbalm prior to lipstick, this will be good for you. However, I do not use this underneath matte lipstick because it changes the lipstick’s finish and texture.

CARMEX CLICK STICK (P109.75 each)

Comes in Strawberry, Cherry, and Original flavors. This one is a bit different. It’s softer, more buttery, and heavier than the one in jar. It also gives off a nice cooling sensation. It’s best for people who live in cold areas, and with severely dry lips because of its superior moisturizing texture.

On lazy days, I just apply tint on my lips and top it off with this one. I dislike using this underneath lipstick because of its heavy feel. But if you prefer maximum protection with a hint of flavor rather than color, this will be great for you.

CARMEX LIPBALM IN TUBE (P109.75)

This is great for those who like having a hint of sexy shine. Just like the Carmex Click sticks, it has a minty taste and superb moisturizing texture. Consistency is semi- liquid, and it does not slide around lips. Coverage is controllable. You can layer it if used on its own, or you can just apply it sparingly if you want to use this underneath lipstick.

If you like topping your lipstick with lipgloss, replace it with this because it's a very reliable weather defense for your lips, and it gives off a nice shine to boot!

All Carmex lipbalms have Broad Spectrum SPF 15 to keep your smoochies protected from the sun.

I know for a fact that some people are allergic to mint extracts in lip balms. Although it is a rarity, I still advise everyone to test the product first because you don't know what product/s can trigger your allergic reactions. If you have makeup sensitivity, you can still use Carmex, but go for the one in jar. :)

Will I repurchase? Oh yes I will. But I still have a lot, so I think I wouldn't be buying one for now. :)

  10. Hey! I have the Carmex click stick and it works really well. I was planning on buying another one when I saw your review on the one in a jar. I'm thinking it has a risk on contamination as you use your fingers to apply. How often do you have to reapply the one in the jar? :)

Your blog was a great help. Thanks!
