THE VERDICT:
Perhaps one of the issues that local retail brands always face from modern consumers is WHY AREN'T THERE ENOUGH SHADES THAT CATER TO DARKER SKIN TONES? We are a tropical country where warm, deep, rich skin tones abound yet most of the selections for local brands are either still too fair or lacking. With all the advancements in cosmetic technology and campaigns that reiterate how important inclusivity is, why is it hard making this possible, right?
I've been on both sides of the fence, brand and consumer. On the retail brand side, there are business, marketing, production, and budget challenges that hugely affect something as simple as a shade range; it's for another discussion though, but thankfully, we have Internet brands that are brave enough to take on the challenge and are showing retail brands that it is possible like GRWM Cosmetics.
GRWM Radiance Tint Concealer is the most diverse concealer range by a Filipino makeup brand and the quality very good too!
GRWM Radiance Tint is a concealer collection with a whopping 12 shade selection, the most diverse among Filipino beauty brands. This concealer promises to provide medium to full coverage, and be long- wearing and hydrating with skin- caring ingredients namely Hyaluronic Acid, Ceramides, and Vitamin E.
The product comes in chic packaging and I like how solid and well- made the tube is. Product comes with a doe foot applicator. Each product comes with a DATE OPENED sticker, a signature of GRWM Cosmetics, that you can stick on the tubes and label so you're reminded when it's time to ditch the product.
I think 12 shades is pretty massive for a local brand let alone a start- up beauty brand considering how hard it is to market deep shades in the Philippines because we have been long used to adjusting to whatever is available in the makeup counter; gotta admire the bravery and you can see the founder's passion in creating modern, diverse cosmetics.
You can divide the shades into three categories: Light, Medium, Warm, and Dark. There are three shades per category.
Here are the shades as described by GRWM Cosmetics:
LIGHT:
03 Ivory - fair with warm undertone
06 Porcelain - fair with neutral undertone
09 Butter - light with peach undertone
MEDIUM:
12 Beige - light with neutral undertone
15 Sand - medium with warm undertone
18 Sienna - medium with peach undertone
WARM:
21 Almond - medium with neutral undertone
24 Chestnut - medium tan with peach undertone
27 Umber - medium tan with warm undertone
DARK:
30 Caramel - deep with pink undertone
33 Toffee - deep with warm undertone
36 Cocoa - deep with neutral undertone
Consistency is semi- creamy and it has a nice vanilla floral fragrance; the scent has medium sillage though so if you are iffy about fragrance in your cosmetics, then this might be a concern for you.
If you have noticed, the shade in each category comes in different yet the most common undertones: neutral, peach, and warm/yellow. Unlike other concealers that are predominantly yellow and would require a separate corrector to effectively conceal heavier discolorations, Radiance Tint offers shades that are mixed in with correcting undertones already, specifically peach. I think it's a nice way to group and conceptualize concealer shades because the product becomes more functional: it gets to address more skin concerns and cater to people with needs beyond plain concealing. The shade spectrum is fluid and one shade isn't too far from the next so you won't have any trouble should you decide to go for the other shades.
L: bare under eye
R: with three dots of 15 Sand then blended
Prior to hitting the beach, I was using Sand and Sienna; now that I'm darker, I'm using Sienna, Almond, or Chestnut.
Coverage is medium to full and it is very easy to spread because it has a creamy, blendable texture. It has great smoothing properties because of its powdery matte finish. Check out how the concealer has evened out, brightened, and improved my right under eye!
Staying power is good for everyday wear, but if you have very oily skin, you may need to prep with a hydrating eye cream to ward off oiliness or in some cases, a primer. And since this product has a powdery matte finish, if you have dry skin, make sure to prep with eye cream. Also, since it has a powdery matte finish, it can be used without mess on top of lightly powdered skin too!
Is there a caveat? Personally, I think the deep shades are too reddish for my skin tone since I use them for contouring and I wish that they came in a taupe undertone. But then again, these are intended to be concealers for our deep- skinned Filipina sisters so I therefore conclude it's not a caveat at all; just apply sparingly and you're good to go.
Overall, GRWM Cosmetics Radiance Tint is a well- made product and kudos to the team for championing diversity. I wouldn't say it's completely inclusive because I am sure that there are more than 12 common skin tones in the Philippines, but it's a start-through this, hopefully, GRWM Cosmetics creates a ripple in the local cosmetics scene and more brands will follow suit.
