THE VERDICT:
Whenever a new, good, and affordable makeup brand comes out, expect it to be talked about by makeup enthusiasts because who doesn't want great stuff at an affordable price?
One of these brands is Squad Cosmetics, which a lot of beauty vloggers and bloggers have been talking about lately; in fact, a lot of you guys have been requesting for me to do a review.
You ask, I listened. Without further ado, here's my review on Squad Cosmetics Makeup Collection, a very affordable and pretty good new makeup brand that's cruelty- free to boot!
Squad Cosmetics is a new affordable Filipino makeup brand; it is a sister brand of Detail Makeover, which is a bit more expensive than the former, but generally budget- friendly.
Squad Cosmetics has a pretty impressive range; they have almost everything from eyebrow pencils to foundation, lipsticks, powders, and cheek and eye palettes. I purchased enough to come up with a full makeup look and I will be reviewing everything in this post.
Squad Cosmetics Boss Eyeshadow Palette (P199) has 9 shades that come in metallic and matte finishes; there are 2 color combinations for the eyeshadow palette; I chose this because the shades are more morena- friendly.
The powders are pretty smooth although yield heavy fallout while I was swatching them. I must say, pigmentation is pretty great, especially for the metallic eyeshadows; they're the smoothest as well.
Squad Cosmetics Contour and Blush Palette in Low Key (P199) features one contour powder, two blushes, and one highlighter; if I am not mistaken, there is only one color combination for this product.
The powders, just like the eyeshadows, yield significant fallout, but are pretty pigmented too. The contouring powder, however, has a strong reddish undertone and looks too stark if used without care and proper blending. The highlighter, on the other hand, has a pigmentation that kinda' reminds me of Fenty's Killawatt Highlighter. The blushes are rosy and midtone pink, but I use the former more because the latter is just too bright for my liking.
Squad Cosmetics You Can Face It Pressed Powder (P229) is the most expensive, oddly, but I'm guessing it's because people will always buy pressed powders on a frequent basis so they're getting the bulk of their earnings from this product. I like the embossed design on the powder; I wouldn't say it's classy, but it's nice that they gave this product some thought. There are about five or six shades of the pressed powder; texture is silky with minimal fallout, pigmentation is sheer to medium, and finish is matte; formula has Vitamin E.
Squad Cosmetics Soft Matte Lipstick (P149) comes in about eight or ten shades; it comes in a sturdy cardboard packaging; lightweight, compact, and easy to bring. Pigmentation is light to medium, texture is creamy, and finish is soft matte.
Squad Cosmetics Brow Game Eyebrow Pencil (P119) is a dual- ended brow pencil that comes with a spoolie on one end. There are four shades. The pencil is sturdy, pigmentation is medium to heavy, but I find the texture a bit waxy and it clumps on my brow strands.
Squad Cosmetics You Can Face It Liquid Foundation (P188) is a medium to full coverage foundation; it comes in about 6 shades. Consistency is lightly creamy liquid, finish is dewy matte, and coverage is medium to full. It seems affordable at first, but on an average, foundations come in 30ml sizes; Squad Cosmetics is P188 for 11ml so if the product were at 30ml, average price would be between P490-P560. For price comparison, Ever Bilena's All Day Foundation is P195 for 35ml. If you use foundation heavily, Squad Cosmetics' foundation won't really be a steal, but if you use it occasionally, then the size and price of their foundation is perfect for you.
Let's try out the products.
Bare skin
With two layers of the foundation
The shade I purchased is Tan. It's a warm beige shade with yellow undertone. I'm pleased that there's a shade that suits morena skin tones and I'm even more pleased to know that the overall quality of the foundation is good!
Here's a close- up of the foundation; it's moisturizing, has good smoothing properties, and is actually pretty pigmented; it has completely covered my mild post- acne marks and while I used concealer on my heavier marks, putting Squad Cosmetics' on top of it has pretty much sealed the deal.
Foundation with You Can Do It Pressed Powder |
The shade I got for the powder is Warm Beige; it's a bit light in the beginning, but it immediately oxidizes a shade darker on me so it adjusts to my skin tone in just a couple of seconds. I like how the powder made my skin look even smoother and improved coverage by another 30%; it's one of those nice, pigmented pressed powders that adds a bit more coverage to give you more flawless- looking skin.
HOWEVER.
Btw, I am using Brow Game Eyebrow pencil in this photo; again, it's too waxy and I did the best I could to even out the product on my brows, but to no avail; it clumped and looked flat on my brows.
Here's a close- up of my skin with just the pressed powder alone; it's patchy and some parts seem to be coming off as I layer the coverage. I tried using a powder brush to apply this powder and though payoff was a bit better, it still didn't look as nice as it did if used on top of foundation.
The powder is a bit dry despite the silky texture; it reminds me of Colourette's Flexipowder; good pigmentation, but dry and fares better if used on top of foundation or another liquid base. Staying power is so-so as well; my face starts oiling up after about 1.5-2 hours only.
That said, I wouldn't recommend this powder if you will use it on its own; it's a good "support" or accent powder if you only want to improve your liquid base's coverage.
I'm wearing the rose blush, contour, and highlighter from the contour and blush palette; go easy on these because they're SUPER pigmented; just a tap of the brush is enough to pick up considerable pigment; it's not for the heavy- handed, I tell you! Staying power is good: it stays on for pretty much the whole day with minimal fading at the end of the day.
Eyeshadow on my lids |
I wasn't expecting so much from the eyeshadow palette, but it is the product that impressed me the most! Even though there's fallout, the colors are true to the palette and very blendable; if used with a good primer, the eyeshadows hold up the whole day.
Soft Matte lipstick in Vigorous |
Vigorous is a dusty rose shade; it's nice and pretty, perfect for my warm skin tone and office and meeting- friendly. It's smooth and semi- creamy, but lasting power is just okay; it needs to be retouched after a meal, but at least it is non- drying on the lips.
Overall, Squad Cosmetics has good quality, though some of the products, you need to find a way to either maximize or apply them properly or nicely; for the price point, I'd say that's not at all bad, but it is not enough for me to say that this brand is the bomb just because the prices are such a steal. Out of all the products I bought, I only liked the liquid foundation, eyeshadow palette, and lipstick; if you have these products in mind as well, then by all means, go ahead and try them because these are my highly- recommended from this brand too!
